1922 - 2016 Notice Condolences


Life long Catonsville resident John Lee Chapman Jr. passed peacefully March 1, 2016 in Catonsville, MD at the age of 93. John attended Gilman School and graduated from Princeton University in 1945 with a degree in mechanical engineering. During WWII he served as a member of the United States Naval Construction Forces. In the Seabees, John rose to Lieutenant J.G. seeing action in the Pacific Theater. John worked for Western Electric and retired after 39 years. John was a lifelong sailor and a member of Gibson Island Yacht Squadron. John also enjoyed fine furniture woodworking. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and through the Pioneers, he enjoyed making woodworking toys for handicapped children. John was born the second child of Margaret Pennington Chapman and John Lee Chapman, both deceased. He is survived by his cousin Chris Pennington and his wife Deborah as well as their son Andrew. He is also survived by his brother's children, Vicki Turney, William John Chapman, III, Robert T. Chapman, and Katherine A. Lewis. He has five great nieces and nephews: Lauren Chapman, Justin Lewis, Anna Lewis, Kate Lewis, and Sara Lewis. His older brother William John Chapman, 2nd and his sister Margaret Pennington Chapman are deceased. May he rest in peace. Relatives and Friends are invited to call at the Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228 on Saturday, March 5, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm, where funeral services will follow at 1:30pm. Interment Druid Ridge Cemetery.
