VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Kenneth S. Reightler, Sr., 91, of the 5400 block of Wesleyen Drive, passed away on June 30, 2016. Born in San Francisco, CA, raised in Baltimore, MD, Mr. Reightler was veteran of the U.S. Navy, having joined the service at 17 before graduating from high school to fight in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Reightler was a "Plank Owner" of USS Shangri-La and served as a crewmember for numerous aircraft carriers and squadrons during the war. He later served during the Korean War and was assigned to a variety of shore and carrier based squadrons, as well as the Naval Air Test Center. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for rescuing a fellow crewmember who had fallen from their ship. He retired from the U.S. Navy after thirty years total service with the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Reightler was also retired from Sovran Bank (formerly Virginia National Bank) with twelve years of service. He was a life member of the USS Shangri-La Reunion Association, the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60 and the Military Officers Association of America. Mr. Reightler was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 2013. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth S. Reightler, Jr., his wife Maureen, and James E. Reightler, his wife Janis; four grandchildren, Katherine Parke, her husband Joseph, Emily Reightler Young, her husband Carter, Ann Reightler, and Kelly Reightler; two great grandchildren, Harrison and Lillian Parke; and two nephews, Robert and Douglas Campbell. The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.
