1928 - 2016 Holyoke, MA - Robert E. "Bob" Bowman, Sr., retired U.S. Army SGM, passed away peacefully on Saturday October 8, 2016 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Bob grew up on a farm with his cousins in Western Maryland and entered the Military at the age of 16, first in the Merchant Marines and then the U.S. Army where he completed two years of college. Bob went on to serve his country honorably in three wars, WWII, Korea, and finally Vietnam where he returned home severely injured. He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of dedicated service. Bob was a true American giving his life to his country and his family, both of whom he loved endlessly. He had an incredible work ethic, a great sense of humor and enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles. Some of Bob's proudest moments were when he was the first to salute three of his children as they became commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. Bob also was a Jiffy Lube Franchisee from 1979 to present, where his employees and customers were of the utmost importance to him. Bob's greeting words were always "Happy New Year", starting a New Year every day. He is survived by his four children, Korby Bowman-Clark and her husband Peter of Agawam, MA Gail Bowman Mathes and her husband Tom of Feeding Hills, MA, Robbie Bowman, Jr. and his wife Connie of Fulton, MD and Leslie Jackson of North Carolina; his seven grandchildren, Keegan Cravo, Joe Clark, Jennifer Shepard, Tony and Sam Mathes and Caroline and Bobby Bowman, III; eight great-grandchildren, including one on the way as well as many dear cousins who were like siblings to him. Besides his mother, Lula C. (Pope) Bowman, he was predeceased by his loving wife June (Lortz) Bowman in 2007 and by his granddaughter, Meghan Bowman in 1991. Family and friends are invited to meet for a period of visitation on Wednesday October 12th from 8:00 - 9:00 AM at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main St. in Agawam, MA followed by a 9:00 AM service in the funeral home.
