Stephen Bennett Carter Notice


Stephen Bennett Carter (age 76) of Columbia, MD, and Fort Myers, FL, passed away May 19, 2016. He was born in Providence, R.I., attended public schools and was awarded the Anthony Medal for writing. He was also a fencing champion and played numerous musical instruments. He received a degree from Boston University and while there he accompanied a fellow student, Joan Baez, at the local Boston venues. He served as an officer and pilot in the Air Force for 6 years including service in Viet Nam as an intelligence officer. He followed with over 40 years in the National Security Agency where he received numerous medals and awards including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He was part of the team that caught and prosecuted spies as well as serving as an expert government witness in noteworthy and newsworthy trials such as the Walker case. After his retirement he worked another 8 years as a government contractor for SPARTA, Inc. and Prophasys Corp. He was also active in community affairs in Columbia, MD, serving on housing and development committees and as a Christmas replacement police dispatcher. Stephen is survived by his Wife, Barbara Matelock Carter, Brother Evans and wife Barbara, Son Mike and wife Wendie, Daughter Laura LeBlanc and husband Greg, Grandsons Jonah and Aaron LeBlanc and Grayson Carter, Step-brother Norman Duxbury and wife Nancy, and Former wife Peggy McCardle. He was preceded in death by first wife Jeanne Gerber Carter. A Memorial Service will be held 11AM, Friday, May 27, 2016 at Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choosing.
