Walter Budko of Timonium, Maryland passed away at Stella Maris Hospice at the age of 87. Walter was born in Kearny, New Jersey. He graduated from Columbia University and is a member of the Columbia University Hall of Fame for his participation as a collegiate basketball player there. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II from 1943-1946. Walt went on to play professional basketball in the fledgling NBA for the Baltimore Bullets from 1948-1952. He is a retired New York Life Insurance agent and has been an active supporter of the arts in Baltimore County for many years. Walt was predeceased by his loving wife Kathleen (nee Sauer) in November 2003 and son William in October 2003. He was the beloved father of Stephen Scott and his wife Susan of Parsippany, New Jersey, Victoria Lynn Broening and her husband James of Stephens City, Virginia and Peter Mitchell and his wife Carol of Weddington, North Carolina; grandfather of Stephen Jr., Alex, Paul, and Evan; great grandfather of Mark; and step grandfather of Daniel, Benjamin and Hannah.
The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Tuesday, June 4 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Mr. Budko will lie in state at the Stella Maris Chapel, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Wednesday, June 5 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Walt's memory to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at MDA.org. Online condolences may be sent to the family through
