Capt. Webster Grewe, USN Retired, of Lake Anna, VA passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 surrounded by his loving family in Charlottesville, VA. Capt. Grewe was born in 1929 in Baltimore, MD and graduated from Catonsville High School in 1947. He enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and was selected for Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI, graduating in 1956 in the top third of his class. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine Grewe, brothers Richard and Charles Grewe and sisters Dorothy, Betty and Louise Grewe, all of Baltimore. Capt. Grewe is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 65 years, Dorothy Saloman Grewe, his sister Jean Holden of Ellicott City, his sons Charles (Olga) Grewe, Todd (Lori) Grewe and daughter Lisa (Wendell) Tignor, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and countless nieces and nephews. A veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, Capt. Grewe's Naval career spanned 36 years, including serving as XO of the USS DuPont during which time the ship sustained casualties and severe damage while supporting U.S. Marines in the DMZ. He commanded the USS Bittern, USS Gearing and the USS Charles P. Cecil. He served under Adm. Stansfield Turner, NATO Allied Forces, Southern Italy and the Pentagon before retiring in 1984. Capt. Grewe then went to work for SAIC, opening their first offices in Saudi Arabia. He retired from SAIC, building his dream home at Lake Anna, where he enjoyed gardening, sailing, various building projects and water sports, bird watching and entertaining his extended family and friends. The family will receive visitors from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Thursday, January 14th at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 West Braddock Road, Alexandria. Funeral services will be held at Belvoir Chapel, 5950 12th Street, Ft. Belvoir, VA at 11AM on January 15th. Burial with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or the .
