Joseph G. Meyers Sr. Notice


Joseph G. Meyers, Sr., Devoted husband, loving father, and dear friend to many, Joseph Garfield Meyers of Freeland, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, July 25, 2014. Joe is survived by his wife and best friend of 42 years, Lee (nee Heckman) Meyers, a son, U.S. Navy Commander Kevin Patrick Meyers, and a daughter, Donna Lee (nee Meyers) Hawkes and her husband, Ken, two sisters, Roberta Bowen and Ada Schultz, and a brother, Paul Meyers. Also survived by four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st class Joseph G. Meyers, Jr., a daughter, Regina Lee (nee Meyers) Michael, and a daugher-in-law, Susan Meyers. A memorial service will begin at 12:30, Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 20901 Mt. Zion Rd., Freeland, MD 21053. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Joe was born in Baltimore on May 3, 1934, son of the late Joseph G. and Roberta M. (nee Dryden) Meyers. Joe worked for many years at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, and after retirement, he worked for Whitcraft School Bus Service driving for Baltimore County Schools. Joe loved driving the schoolbus and the children loved and respected him. Joe enjoyed music, airplanes, especially when he learned how to fly sail planes, but most of all, he loved working in and around his home in Freeland. He started with a three acre hayfield, bought a pre-cut home that he and his wife worked together to build, then planted over 300 trees. Joe was very proud of both his sons for serving and having a career in the United States Navy and loved to share the stories if their travels and commendations. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at the address above, or Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 35, Maryland Line, MD 21105, or Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 70, 21631 York Rd., Maryland Line, MD 21105. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N.
