Notice Condolences

BROWN , Sidney Ann Peard Sidney Peard Brown , a longtime resident of Darien and New Canaan, died peacefully on April 24, 2009 at Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT. She was 77. Born May 15, 1931 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Frank Furnival Peard of Baltimore, MD and the late Nancy Wheeler Peard Speed of Baltimore, MD. Sidney grew up in Baltimore and spent her summers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland sailing on Gibson Island. As a young girl she attended Bryn Mawr and Garrison Forest Schools in Baltimore and was an accomplished badminton player ranked third in the nation in doubles. Sidney enjoyed the social events of Baltimore and debuted at the Baltimore Cotillion. In 1955, she married the love of her life James Barrett Brown, Jr. of St. Louis, MO. They had been introduced by family friends and won a Charleston contest the first night they met. For the first two years of their marriage, the two made New Haven their home as "Jim" finished his degree at Yale University and Sidney was employed by the University. In 1960, after a few years in Cleveland, OH, the Brown family moved to Miles Road in Darien, CT where many of their lifelong friendships began. It was a wonderful neighborhood with 25 households and 75 children for the family to grow and prosper. Friendly competitions with neighboring rival Walmsely Road made for lively softball games and block parties. The annual Halloween Parade was a favorite. Summers were always spent on a beach, some of the happiest times of her life. Rehoboth and Bethany Beach, DE as well as Nantucket Mass. were her favorite spots. In addition to her other responsibilities, Sidney was employed at Pappagallo/Parrot Limited in Darien and the Whitney Shop in New Canaan. She was often heard saying, "Just call me, I'll be at the Shop". She loved to work and cherished many friendships and the comradery of her co-workers. She always had a warm big smile on her face and just loved working the sidewalk sales where she would see all her friends in town. She was a member of the Junior League, Children's Aid Society, The Garden Club of Darien, Wee Burn Country Club, Coral Beach in Bermuda and Sea Oaks in Vero Beach, FL. She is pre-deceased by her husband James Barrett Brown, Jr. and survived by three children: Edward (Tim) D. Brown, Virginia P. Brown and Elizabeth (Lisa) B. Wensberg, six grandchildren and her sister Nancy Peard Hanner of Skaneateles, NY. In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her brother Frank Furnival Peard, Jr. of Duxbury, MA. Mrs. Brown was a gracious beautiful woman. Her understated elegance was evident throughout her life whether it was arranging flowers, taking care of her grandchildren or going to Derby Day at Wee Burn. She instilled a quick smile and love of life that has passed down to two generations. She was devoted to her husband, Jim, of 54 years and tirelessly managed his care until her own parting. Her children are a wonderful extension of her creation, love and devotion to family.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday May 1, 2009 at St. Luke's Parish in Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Waveny Care Center, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan, CT 06840 or to "Hackers for Hope", c/o Tim Brown, 107 Bickford Lane, New Canaan, CT 06840.
