GARRANT , Col. George F. On Wednesday, May 25, 2011, COL. GEORGE F. GARRANT, age 84, passed away at his residence. Born in Plattsburgh, NY on February 27, 1927, George was drafted in mid 1945 while living in Saranac Lake, NY. He served in WWII, Korean and the Vietnam Wars, serving more than 31 years on active duty plus three years in the NY National Guard. He served in the Armored, Infantry and Intelligence Corps. In Japan George served at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. In Korea he earned the Combat Infantry Badge in 1953 while serving with 7th Regt of the 3rd Infantry Division. He commanded the 8th Radio Relay Field Station at Phu Bai in Vietnam and later served at SHAPE, Belgium as The Chief of the Intelligence Division for NATO from 1970-1975. His decorations included the Department of Defense Superior Defense Medal, The Legion of Merit with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, The Joint Service Commendation Medal, The Army Commendation Medal and numerous Service Medals. In summary, George served eight years in the Pacific and 14 years in Europe. He had four tours with the National Security Agency as a member of the Army Security Agency. Upon his retirement in January 1980, he moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. He received a BA Degree from Champlain College University of NY in 1951. George studied and could read and write five languages, Japanese, German, French, Polish, and Spanish. He was an ardent Golfer, he joined the Retired Military Golf Association (RMGA) at Whispering Pines in 1980, was President of the RMGA in 1982. He managed the Intercoastal Seniors Golf Assn. in 1982, the "Bucks & Does" from Deertrack Plantation from 1982 until 1990 and The Retired Military Gold Assn. from 1992 until 2006. He was survived by his wife, Celia Hoyt (Buckley) Garrant who he married on March 10, 1999. He was also survived by two children by his late wife Sylvia Harriett Garrant, (who passed away in 1994.) Georgiana Lee (Sandy) Lehman and her husband Bob of Linthicum, MD; Robert M. Garrant and his wife Christine of Severna Park, MD; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; plus a brother, Roy A. Garrant and his wife Carol of Plattsburgh, NY.
