Stanley B. Miller Notice
MILLER , Stanley B. On July 22, 2012, Stanley Bernard Miller, age 87, WWII veteran, passed away peacefully. Born at home on a farm in Elkridge, MD on December 9, 1924, he was the fifth child (of fifteen) to John R. Miller and Jessie Mae (Goode) Miller. He attended Ellicott City Elementary school, an old stone building on College Avenue. He married Doris Ruth Williams on July 30, 1943 just before being shipped overseas to England for advanced training in artillery and radio. He was a forward observer, radio operator, and a machine gunner. He landed on Omaha Beach early on D-Day and fought for the next 12 months, including the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe, earning five bronze stars, a silver star, and the Gold congressional Medal of honor for battles fought. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1945. He hurried home (it took two months) to his wife and met his two year old daughter for the first time. He worked as a carpenter building houses for several years, then started his own building business. He and Doris had four more children in the next eight years. In 1959, he and Doris bought a farm in Lisbon, MD where he enjoyed raising cattle, pigs, chickens, crops, and a large vegetable garden. In 1964, he retired from his business and went to work for Howard County as a building inspector. He soon became the chief building inspector/engineer. Since all his children had become adults and left home, he retired from the county in 1976, which enabled him to have time to pursue gardening and light farming. He became a master gardener in 1978. He continued to maintain a large vegetable garden and various trees, flowerbeds, etc. He and Doris wintered in Florida for about 20 years. However, he lived on his farm the remainder of his life. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7472 and a member of the Lisbon United Methodist Church. He and Doris were married over 66 years until she passed away in October 2009. Their love and wisdom has greatly impacted the next three generations of descendants. He will be missed by his five children and their spouses: Mary Ruth Harless and husband Emerson, Stanley B. Miller, Jr and wife Ellen, June Adele Mitchell and husband Allen, Claudia Annette Dorsey, and husband Phil, Jesse James Miller and wife Judy. He had 12 grandchildren; Steven and Susan Croston, Lucinda, Stanley B. III, Michael (deceased 2001) and Peter Miller, Chester and Luke Mitchell, Christian, Rebecca, and David Dorsey, and Sarah Miller; and 17 great- grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 11 AM at the Lisbon United Methodist Church in Lisbon, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lisbon United Methodist Church memorial fund.
