Grace S. JONES Notice
JONES , Grace S. Grace Sellers Jones, 101, died on November 25, 2012 at the Maryland Masonic Home in Hunt Valley, MD. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where she was a high school basketball all star. She also excelled at tennis at the time when tennis was in its fledgling years for women. Grace attended Temple University in the 30s, and taught fourth grade in a Philadelphia inner city school. She married the late John Bayley Jones, IV, who served as a United Methodist pastor, retiring from Towson United Methodist Church in 1976. Grace was an active pastor's wife, often contributing anecdotal illustrations for his weekly sermons. She taught in schools of mission, was a leader in the United Methodist Women's Society, and focused on social concerns. She was especially active in the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s. She will be remembered by many young women in the congregation who sought her out for comfort during stressful times in their lives. Grace and John chose to spend their retirement years in Frostburg, MD where they remained active in the Frostburg United Methodist Church. They settled into the Masonic Home community in 1999. She is survived by her three children, John Bayley Jones, V of Brunswick, ME, Grace Sue Schmidt of San Francisco and her husband Drago Schmidt, and Judy Hickey of Baltimore and her husband Carl R. Hickey. She loved reading, knitting, opera, and movies. Mostly, we are grateful for her loving support throughout our lives. She had five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family celebrated her life in a private service.
