Dr. Mountcastle was a giant. I was at Hopkins for my BA and PhD in the 70s and Dr. Mountcastle personally guided my choice of where to do my PhD (with Mark Molliver at Hopkins) and later on, where to do my Postdoctoral work (with Floyd Bloom at Salk). I stayed in touch with him throughout my career and he was always gracious and interested in hearing about my research. He had an enormous impact on my career- far more than he likely realized.
