David Punzelt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 25, 2012.
CASTINE - The one and only Capt. David Lum Punzelt, 82, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 1, 1929, in Norwalk, Conn., to Katharine (Smith) Punzelt and Philip Muller Punzelt. He grew up in Westport, Conn., where he attended Staples High School. David went on to graduate from New York State Maritime Academy, class of 1950. Upon graduation, he was employed as ship's officer with US Steamship Company, during which time he upgraded his Merchant Marine license and obtained his New York harbor pilot's license. His last ship with US Lines was the SS United States, famous for being the fastest passenger ship of its time. In 1955 he elected to activate his Navy commission and made a 30-year career in the Navy. After flight school in Pensacola, Fla., his 30-year flying status included assignments in Okinawa, Kwajalein and the Pentagon. He deployed on 10 aircraft carriers in a flying status. Besides flying five different types of helicopters, including the Sea King, his favorite aircraft was the F6F Hellcat. His last formal flying was as an admiral's pilot on the C131. David and Carolyn retired to Castine in 1982. Retirement was a misnomer as he continued to serve his community, church, friends and family. Among his many activities, he was president of the Navy League, a volunteer ambulance driver for 18 years, and active in the Castine Golf Club. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the Bishop's Committee and ushered for many years. His life cannot be summed up adequately in one newspaper column. To know him was to know that rare individual who comes along once in a millennium. David was a force of nature and a friend to all. Random acts of kindness, two dollar bills, chocolate kisses, and unicycles are his legacy. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn; and his devoted daughters, Margaret Ann Heppe and her husband, Howard, of Spotsylvania, Va., Elizabeth Ann Bibber and her husband, Jim, of Harpswell and Katharine Ann Morris and her husband, Woody, of Fairfax, Va.; five wonderful grandchildren, Sara, Scott and his wife, Erica, Andrew, Jake and Carly Ann; and finally his cherished sister, Jane Ann Herfort. He was predeceased by his brother, Philip Punzelt Jr. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date and a summer memorial service will be held at Trinity Church, date and time to be announced. Memorials in his name may be made to Trinity Church, 150 Perkins St., Castine, ME 04421 or to LifeFlight, P.O. Box 899, Camden, ME 04843 or at www.lifeflightmaine.org. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.

Tom and I were so sad to hear the news that dear, sweet, David Punzelt passed away. What a guy.....one the most unforgettable characters we have ever met! He was always thinking ahead. Carolyn, remember when you celebrated your 75th birthday and he called ahead to all the stops on the way to Boca Raton to make sure everyone had a cake for you! That's just one out of a million of his nice gestures. David was king of the “pranksters.” I wish we could count the chocolate kisses and $2 bills David left at our home! How he got into our bedroom without us knowing it, we'll never know! He must have had Hershey stocks!

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the Punzelts, he will truly be missed.
Love you guys.....Carole & Tom Barba

Oh, Captain Dave....I miss you already....shipmate...one of a kind...friend to all. I'm reading this at sea, but will be home soon and the Punzelt family can call anytime for anything. My heart goes out to you. I know where you are going there are some fellow Chiefs that will look out for you and "show you the ropes"

Dave was my classmate and friend, and I reflected on his life with an ode.
The Sea

I called you.
My arms reached out
and sounded on the shore.
Do not tarry.

You came.
Sailed my waters far and wide.
Learned my ways and timed my tide.
Tarried not.

You left.
To sail no more on the main.
To rest where voyagers lie beyond.
Tarry

Dear Carolyn,
I am sad to have read about Dave's passing. He always made me laugh.I loved saving him popcorn on Fridays and I continued to do so after his last valve operation, just in case he was able to get out. He shared so many interesting stories. Since I left the bank, I have thought of you both often. My thoughts & prayers are with you and the family. His memories will live on in so many. He was a special person. I'm sure I'll think of him everytime I have a Hershey Kiss. God Bless you & the family.

Captain Punzelt (and the whole Punzelt family) have been friends of my family for as long as I can remember and I'm sure much longer than that. I came to know him through attending Maine Maritime Academy and having him as my sponser freshman year. Listening to sea stories over a home cooked meal was a highly cherished reprieve from the day to day life at school.

Captain Punzelt will be greatly missed by many, never forgotten, and always fondly thought of.

Fair winds and following seas sir.

A very nice man who truly brightened people's day. I remember him always giving us girls at the Bangor Commissary chocolate kisses. Condolences to "Captain"'s family. Rest in Peace, Captain!

Captain David was my dear friend, mentor and role model.
We met back in the 80s on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. My partner Glenn and I were tenting on our newly purchased house lot. Carolyn and David let us use fresh water from the cistern of their rented house. A simple neighborly act of kindness precipitated a decades long friendship of the highest order.
When David underwent bypass surgery several years ago we circulated a pineapple get well card on Eleuthera. So many, many people; natives, expats, tourists and winter residents alike, wanted to wish the 'two dollar bill man' a speedy recovery.
He is truly a most unforgettable character. It has been a special privilege to know him.
Bartender, I'll have a Rob Roy in the memory of the Captain.

Carolyn, Heppe's and Morris's Families
My memories of David are like many others, Playing a round of golf and reaching the hole to only find a circle or trail of chocolate kisses around the hole. Paying for goods at a local business and getting 2 dollars bills back as change for your transaction you always knew that you were not far behind David. David left his mark on everyone that had contact with him and made himself one of the true greats of Castine.
