Frederick Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2010.
HAMPDEN - Dr. Frederick George Jones Jr., 71, beloved husband, dad, pa, teacher, organist, choirmaster and author, passed away May 15, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Neptune Beach, Fla., the son of Goldie Johnston Jones and Frederick Jones. He was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Jones LaMee; and his parents. He leaves behind his sister, Pamela Jones Feuerherm; his loving wife, Judy; his children, Siri, Lisa, Jefferson and Stephanie; his grandchildren, Anna, Ashley and Sam; Uncle Bill; Aunty Elsa and Aunt Ruby; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He graduated cum laude from the University of the South, Sewanee, and received his doctorate in Old English from the University of Florida. He was first and foremost a teacher. He taught in the English department of State University of New York Binghamton and was a favorite teacher and mentor to hundreds of students at John Bapst Memorial High School for 29 years. He had hoped to finish his last quarter of teaching and then pursue other projects in his retirement. His other great passion was music. He served as an organist-choirmaster for 50 years, most recently at St. John's Episcopal Church from 1981 to 2005. He loved to travel and led his choirs and groups of high school students on numerous tours of the British Isles and Ireland. He was a student of prehistory and archaeology, and author of "Chasing the Sun: A Journey in Neolithic Speculation." A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 234 French St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the newly established Dr. Frederick G. Jones Jr. Scholarship Fund at John Bapst Memorial High School, 100 Broadway, Bangor, ME, 04401. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Jones as one of my teachers at Bapst. He was not only a wonderful teacher, but a great mentor. He made my experience, as well as a handful of others, at Bapst a memorable and meaningful one. He has touched the lives of mine and countless others. He will me sadly missed. I have many memories of class time spent with Dr. Jones. I was very fortunate to have him for both Freshman and Junior English. He was a wonderful teacher, always ready to help in any way possible, be it advice or help with Shakespeare translations.

We always were happy to get him off topic and hear his stories or going to listen to him play organ at St. John’s Episcopal Church. I also have memories of him playing at our Baccalaureate Night.

I also remember what a friendly person he was. He would give a nod and a smile as he was walking down the hall.

My condolences out to his family and friends. The JB family also has suffered a great loss, he touched many students lives.

I have such fond memories of Fred. We were in the same high school class. I'll always see him as a young man with a good sense of humor and a gentle nature. He was smart too! I know his students must have loved him. My sincere condolences to his family. Pat Hammond

My sincere condolences to the Jones family and to all his friends. I haven't seen Fred since Fletcher days when I was in the choir at St. Paul's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church and Fred was our organist and choir director for a short time. I have never forgotten his enthusiasm, talent, kindness, and infinite patience toward us rowdy teenage choir members. I will also never forget his infectious smile, which always seemed to be on his face. I'm glad he was able to pursue interests that were meaningful to him and to touch so many other lives.

Dr. Jones was one of a handful of teachers that made a true, life-long impact on me. He looked past the awkward confusion of teenagers to see and inspire minds and imaginations. By his own example and with encouragement both blatant and subtle, he fanned the sparks of countless creative intellects. I haven't seen him in 20 years, but I have missed him for that long and will never forget him. My condolences to all who knew him and feel this loss.

To all his family and all who loved Dr. Jones,
Please accept my deepest sympathies as you mourn his loss. I am grateful to have been his student and in his choir; he was an amazing, inspiring person. Whether a small child, an awkward teenager, or anyone else, I suppose, he had a way of pausing and grinning at you from behind his antique spectacles and making you felt like a glorious mench. He had such an infectious love of multiple topics, and a way of putting subjects in the context of a broad history of human though. I will remember him as a kind, accepting, brilliant man, who used his powers to enrich thousands of young lives. To a life well-lived, and with deep appreciation,
Beth, Class of 1991

Dr. Jones was one of my favorite teachers at Bapst. It's been almost 20 years now since I was at Bapst but I remember his english classes like they were yesterday. He was a great man, and I feel very privileged to have known him. He will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in your time of sorrow.

Please accept our sincere condolences. As a fellow Fletcher student, I remember my occasional visits to the Jones home in Neptune Beach very well. The entire family was a credit to the beaches community, contributing in many ways. I am not surprised that Fred had such a meaningful and distinguished career and full life, and it pleases me to know this. Our sympathy goes out to the entire family.

I knew Fred at Fletcher, & am happy to see that he led such a fulfilling & beneficial life - especially giving of himself for others. It would have been wonderful if we had known about his interest in archaeology, as two of my classmates would have enjoyed discussing their similar interest (Bill Evenden & Fred Williams). I was born in the Binghamton area (Endicott), so a possible roundtable discussion, plus we had all visited the British Isles. Fred certainly made his mark, & know he will rest in peace. A number of years ago, I had the privilege of being an English student of the venerable Dr. Jones at John Bapst. Even now, it is rare for a week pass by when I don’t find myself drawing from the many lessons he taught me. His passion for life and knowledge was truly inspiring. Thank you so much for everything, Dr. Jones, and may you rest in peace. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Judy, children and grandchildren, please accept my sincere condolences. Jack. Class of 1998.

To Dr. Jones' family and friends,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I had Dr. Jones for three years at John Bapst and he was an amazing teacher and an amazing soul. His knowledge and zest for teaching was outstanding. I know many who feel the same way. I will always remember his deep laugh and gentle smile along with the many stories he would tell. Whenever I hear beautiful music played on an organ I will forever remember Dr. Jones. Thank you Dr. Jones. Laura, Class of 1999
