Lana left us peacefully in the early morning on June 23, 2015 after a full and rewarding life. She was born on January 24, 1921 to Christian and Lucy Larsen in Coronation, Alberta. With beautiful red hair and freckles to match, she grew up with her sister, Hilda and brother, Stanley and many cousins from the Brownfield and Coronation areas. As a teenager, she was actively involved with the CGIT. Lana's Granny (Hannah Fleming) was a positive influence for the young teenager and their relationship grew as Lana helped clean her house and provided hours of personal care to her aging grandmother. It was a great loss to Lana when Granny passed away in the early 1930s. In 1936, the family moved to Calgary where Lana attended Crescent Heights High School. She worked part-time at Eaton's in the cosmetic department and earned extra money babysitting. In 1941, Lana began her nurses training at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. In those days, it was a regimented program – you could not be married, you had to live in residence and as a student nurse, she made $10.00 a month. On November 7, 1944, Lana married John Withage. They lived on a farm at Nobleford, Alberta for 17 years. Lana and John had five children. Eugene was born on December 28, 1946 and died on December 28, 1947. Bryan, Doreen, Dale and Joy followed. When the family farm was sold in 1960, the family moved to Barrhead on July 14, 1961. On July 12, 1984, after several years of illness, her husband of 40 years passed away. Lana not only enjoyed but was exceptionally skilled at knitting and creating many exquisite pieces of petit point and needlepoint. To this day, family and friends continue to enjoy the treasured pieces she created. Lana worked at the Barrhead Hospital, Barrhead Nursing Home, Westlock Auxiliary Hospital and ended her career providing home care. Lana retired in 1986 and celebrated with a trip to Australia with her sister, Hilda and Elmer to visit her nephew, Wayne and his family. In 1989, Lana met Art Degen, a local farmer. Lana and Art were great companions for one another and their special friendship introduced them to new activities like camping, fishing and travelling. They ended each day enjoying dinner together and calling each other every morning. It was an enormous loss for Lana, when Art passed away in October 2009. Lana curled, bowled and filled executive positions in nursing, FCSS and Adult Day Programs. Her first love though was golfing. Lana was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds with friends and family over the years. She earned the title of Lady Champion of the Barrhead Golf Club and a gold medal at the Seniors' Games. In 1993, she gave up the game as walking became too difficult. In Lana's senior years, she kept active with church work, prayer groups, taking communion to the residents at Hillcrest and Keir Care, volunteering at monthly blood pressure clinics, participating and organizing group activities at Shepherd's Care and mentoring many of the staff at Shepherd's Care over the eight years she was a resident. Lana will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Bryan (Joan) Withage, Doreen (Allan) Farrants, Dale (Susan) Withage and Joy Sturwold; six grandchildren: Chris (Melissa) Sturwold, Jill Sturwold, Allison (Kevin) Dennis, Gregory (Mariah) Farrants, Heidi (Craig) Mills and Rebecca (Michael) Withage; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Henrietta Nieboer and many much loved nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Eugene; husband, John Withage (1919 - 1984); sister, Hilda; brother, Stanley and parents, Christian and Lucy Larsen. We mourn with tremendous pride and gratitude for the many years of love and support she gave us. A funeral service was held Thursday, July 2nd, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church, 5406 - 49 Street, Barrhead, AB T7N 1A3 (780) 674-2788 with interment to follow at the Barrhead Cemetery.
