Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jean Gray Slaughter of Bastrop will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with the Reverends Delton Jordan, Jr. and Fred Oden officiating. Interment will follow at the Hickory Grove Cemetery near Crossett, Arkansas under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Betty Jean Slaughter was born May 25, 1929 in Ashley County, Arkansas to the union of John Franklin Gray and Frances Morgan Gray. She passed from this life, surrounded by her family, at her home in Bastrop on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

Mrs. Slaughter is preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Mattie Gray; her husband, Jessie J. Slaughter; former husband and the father of her children, Floyd Streeter; five sisters, Daisy Gray, Nell Slaughter, Joyce Smith, Diane Savage, and Rita Fay Gray; and two brothers, the Rev. Junior Gray and Doyle Gray.

Betty was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church and attended Oak Hill Baptist Church in Bastrop. She was a nurse serving many years at Morehouse General Hospital, Cherry Ridge Guest Care, and Summerlin Lane Nursing Home. She was a member of the Boone-McDowell Post of the V.F.W. and a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxillary Post 2277 where she was very active. She loved her work assisting and serving all the veterans at the Northeast Louisiana Veteran's Home. She will be remembered by her family as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin. She was a friend to all who knew her and will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.

Mrs Slaughter is survived by her three daughters, Frances Peppers, Betty Smalling "Tiny" Smith, and Ruby Nell Streeter ,all of Bastrop; two sons, Eugene Streeter and wife Pat and Lloyd "Deanie" Streeter both of Bastrop; three sisters, Ruby Thomason and husband Harley of Harrison, Ark, Sarah Rushing of Conway, Ark, and Jodi Kelly and husband Joe of Hot Springs, Ark; eleven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers are Trey Peppers, Cody Peppers, Seth McFadden, Jason Smalling, Justin Smalling, and Jarrod Smalling.
Honorary pallbearers are Bryan Hunt, B.B. Cox, Carl Gray, and Frank Allen Gray.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop.
