Funeral services for Mr. Eugene Herlong will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2010 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. Marty Black officiating. Interment with military funeral honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 5 at Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop.

Early Eugene Herlong was born October 7, 1952 in Oak Grove to Minnie Herlong Haddick Holloway and the late Clifton Cecil Herlong. He passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 3, 2010 at Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop.

Eugene was a graduate of Bastrop High School, a veteran of the United States Army, and a retired paper machine 1 & 2 operator with International Paper Company.

Mr. Herlong is preceded in death by his father; paternal grandparents, Cecil C. Herlong and Edna Herlong Odom; and maternal grandparents, Ernest E. Hamby and Lorene Hamby.

Eugene is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Polk and her husband Brian, a granddaughter, Marykate Polk all of Fort Worth, Texas; his mother, Minnie Herlong Haddick Holloway of Bastrop; two sisters, Carolyn Bullock and her husband, Terry of Smith, Alabama and Sharon Harrell and her husband, Larry of Bastrop; one nephew, two nieces, one great-nephew, and six great-nieces.

Serving as pallbearers are David Vickers, Hunter Vickers, Roy Jones, Wayne Jones, Jimmy Coffin, and Heath Calhoun.
