Funeral services for Michael Donald Smith, 47, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Greater Magnolia M.B.C. in Bastrop with the Rev. D.E. Higginbotham officiating. Burial will follow in the H.V. Adams Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2009 at Tennant Funeral Home, Bastrop.

Michael was born to the late Eddie and Evelyn Smith on Feb. 14,1962. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the late Rev. E.L. Grant.

He was an outstanding athlete at Bastrop High School. He was part of the marching band, football team and weight-lifting team. He was a 1981 graduate of Delta High School. After graduating, he attended Coahoma Jr. College in Clarksdale, Miss.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herman "Bobby" Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Okema and Virginia Smith of Oakland, Calif.; five brothers, Edward Smith of Oakland, Calif., Johnny Smith of Union City, Calif., Thomas (Robin) Smith, Sam (Rose) Smith of Union City, Calif. and Willie (Valerie) Wallace of Bastrop; five sisters, Marie (Jeremiah) Johnson of Bastrop, Delores (William) Rogers of Crossett, Ark., Linda (Michael) Higginbotham of Bastrop, Carolyn McDaniel of Collinston and Brenda (Louie) Pruitt of Bastrop; three aunts, Verdie Wallace, Darline Smith and Rosie Robinson and God Aunt Ethel Williamson, all of Bastrop; adopted sister, Monica (Bennie) Barber of Bastrop; two special friends, Ned Stephens and Derrick Harris; 22 nieces, seven nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
