Our loving wife and mother, Vera Katherine Darden Witherington, of Bastrop, passed away on Sunday August 15, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday August 18, 2010 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with the Reverends Marcus Akers and Justin Akers officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will also be Wednesday August 18, 2010 beginning at 9 a.m. until time for services at the funeral home.

Katherine Darden Witherington was born June 13, 1917 in Hamburg, Ark. to her parents William Franklin Darden and Vivian Gunther Darden. She was also greeted at home by her big sister, Flora May. Ms. Katherine graduated from Bastrop High School and at the age of 24, she met her husband Pete at the boarding house on North Washington Street in Bastrop, which her parents owned and operated along with the family buisness, Darden's Grocery. She and Pete were married on August 29, 1942 and would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this month. Together, they enjoyed a loving and happy marriage and as Ms. Katherine would say, "there was never a dull moment married to Pete."
Mrs. Witherington was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Vivian Darden; her sister, Flora May Autrey; and a granddaughter, Kara Anisa Gilbert.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Pete Witherington; two children, Roy Hollis Witherington and his wife, Jeanette and Kathy Darden Gilbert and her husband, Gary; six grandchildren, Hollis, Chandler and Ryan Witherington, and Kory, Natale and Garrett Gilbert; eight great-grandchildren, Jamie Nichols, Katie Witherington, Anna Claire Witherington, John Collin Witherington, Luke Witherington, Sarah Elizabeth Witherington, Samuel Gilbert, Emma Katherine Gilbert; and one great-great-grandchild, Jenny Nichols.
Serving as pallbearers will be Hollis Witherington, Chandler Witherington, Kory Gilbert, Garrett Gilbert, Dr. Roger Billings and Chris Bennett.
