Louis Charles Hoskyns, Jr

Louis Charles Hoskyns, Jr., 82, passed peacefully on September 18, 2013. Born on December 22, 1930 in Jackson, Michigan, he was the son of Louis Charles Hoskyns, Sr. and Irene Pease Hoskyns. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Jackson, MI and Michigan State University. Lou was proud to be a member of the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. He moved his family to Tryon, NC in November, 1957 to become the Golf Pro at Tryon Country Club. When Red Fox Country Club opened in 1965, he became the Golf Pro there, starting the pro shop out of “The Shack”. During his time at Red Fox, the course was listed in Golf Digest Top 100 courses. He was also instrumental in recruiting NCAA golf teams to play at Red Fox each spring. Lou became a partner in Lan-Yair Country Club in Spartanburg, SC. He also was associated with The Creek Golf Course. He became a Class A Life Member of the Professional Golfers Association in 1957. He was a member of the NC Mountains Chapter PGA, serving as President in 1980. Lou was active with the First Tee of Spartanburg program. He loved to hunt and fish, making many trips to Canada and Florida to pursue these passions. Lou was also a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Lou is survived by his brother, Gordon W. Hoskyns (Margie) of Palm City, FL, his daughters, Mary Jo Hoskyns of Ashburn, VA, Lynn Ann Chajewski (George) of Charleston, SC, Suzanne Peterson, of Spartanburg, SC and his son, Louis C. Hoskyns, III of Spartanburg, SC. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Colleen Dieterly (Tom) of Asheville, NC, Adrian and Ryan Peterson of Spartanburg, SC, Jackson and Cole Hoskyns of Spartanburg, Olga Chajewski of Baltimore, MD and Michael Chajewski of New York, NY. Also surviving are two great-grandsons, a niece and nephew and special friend Nettie Barnett. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Jack Beck and a sister Agatha (Sis) Beck Sheffold. The family will receive friends from 4:00PM to 6:00PM on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Dunbar Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, September 23, 2013 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Spartanburg, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Tee of Spartanburg, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg or the American Red Cross Association.
