The family moved to the Kittery/Eliot area of Maine when Hiram was still a child, and he began working for the Maine/New Hampshire bridge authority in his teens. Hiram worked until early retirement in this capacity and then returned to the NH bridge authority to work raising and lowering the Interstate bridge until his final retirement. Hiram was also a lobsterman for many years out of the Eliot marina, and captained several boats over the years. Hiram was married twice and raised 6 children in the Eliot area. Hiram enjoyed much of his time trapping, hunting and fishing with family and friends during the years following his retirement at his camp on Penobscot pond, and it is fitting that he should end his days in his most beloved place.
