Even though she was my great aunt, I first met her as my piano teacher at age 7. That probably was not the first time but it is the first I can recall. Joy and I were only about 6 months apart in age, we quickly became close friends for many years. Joy and I would sit up late and do the messiest, most ridiculous things. I would have never thought of those things at home because I knew my own mother would LOUDLY object. We would melt crayons in a pan on the stove, then pour them into empty salt shakers, find a shoestring and drop it in as a wick and let it dry til morning. I was sure we would be in big trouble after Aunt Melda saw the mess. But, no. She would cook us breakfast--sometimes serve it to us in bed.
Once Joy and I found the food coloring and made LOTS of green eggs. We got sick looking at them and threw them away. No telling how many eggs we wasted.
Aunt Melda taught me so much about class, and grace, and love and faith. No matter what tragedy--she continued to walk in the Word of God. She kept her eye on the prize that is promisted in God's word. She loved her family like no one I have ever seen.
I am sad that we cannot exchange emails any more. But I am happy when I just think about her reunion with Uncle Evans, baby David, Robert and Paul.
And something tells me she is going to have fried oysters all cooked up and ready when I get there! Love you Aunt Melda. Thank you serving Him. You left behind a beautiful legacy. Sheree
