Roy Hobbs Obituary


Roy Houston Hobbs of Wilmington, NC passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016 at home.


He was born May 10, 1927 in Wilmington, NC the son of the late Roy Franklin Hobbs and Daisy Etta Bradshaw Hobbs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Grace Gurganious Hobbs, his brother, James Franklin Hobbs, and his sister, Hazel Virginia Herring.


Roy learned to fly at the Carolina Beach Air Strip prior to serving his country honorably in the 508th Parachute Infantry of the United States Army during World War II.


He was in the first class of Wilmington College when classes were held at New Hanover High School.


Roy went to work for Piedmont Airlines as an aircraft mechanic and later retired as Captain after flying 32 years with Piedmont Airlines.


He was formerly an Elder and member of Little Chapel On The Boardwalk at Wrightsville Beach, NC and was currently a member of St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church.


He was a 32nd degree mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Civitan Club, QB, and Cape Fear Country Club.


Being an avid sailor, he was Past Commodore of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Racing Association, Past Commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club, and Past Commodore of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association.


He leaves behind Merle Pittman Murray Hobbs, whom he married in 2007, two daughters, Melodee Hobbs Wynne and husband Jim of Teachey, NC, and Leigh Hobbs Murray and husband Brad of Wilmington, NC; and one granddaughter, Olivia Grace Murray.

Friends are welcome to visit the family at 2620 Mayfair Dr., Wilmington, NC 28403


Memorial services will be held 11am Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The Alzheimer's Foundation or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Thank you for letting us hear this sad news. It was such a privilege for us to work with Roy for so many years at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk. We appreciated all of the leadership which he and Grace, Melodee and Leigh gave in the life of that congregation while we were there. May God continue to bless, comfort and strengthen all of you in your sorrow.
