William F. Libby, age 85, devoted husband of the late Elizabeth "Betty" (Gibbons) Libby, died Thursday afternoon, September 12, 2013 at the Haverhill Crossings Assisted Living Facility in Haverhill surrounded by his loving family.


Born in Salem the son of the late Francis and Ethel (Massison) Libby he attended St. James Grammar School. A graduate of Salem High School in the class of 1945, Mr. Libby entered the United States Army Air Corps and served his country during WWII in Germany. In the following years he was recalled to the United States Air Force to serve in the Korean War. Mr. Libby then began his career at the United Shoe Machine Corporation in Beverly and retired from General Electric in Lynn as a machinist at the age of 65.


He enjoyed taking daily walks on Salem Common with long-time friends, watching sports, reading Tom Clancy and W.E. B. Griffin novels, and being with family, friends, and canine companions, Goose and Greeley. Recently he resided in Plaistow, NH with his daughter's family.


Surviving him are three children, William Libby and his wife Nancy of Danvers, Maureen Russell and her husband Bradley of Plaistow, NH and Michael Libby and his wife Danielle of Salem; three sisters, his twin Winifred Condon of Salem, Patricia Bulger and Sandra Konopka and her husband John all of Peabody, one brother Francis Libby and his wife Joan of Kingston, NH, his sisters in law Anna Connor of Haverhill and Eileen Gibbons of Danvers; seven grandchildren, Megan Libby, Evan Russell, Daniel Libby, William Libby, Nolan Russell, Suzanne Libby and Alexandra Libby and several nieces and nephews.


The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Haverhill Crossings and Merrimac Valley Hospice for their genuine care and support.


His Funeral will be held on Tuesday September 17, 2013 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem, to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2 Margin St., Peabody . Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
