Robert Gray Obituary

Robert Gray Robert was born to Ernest and Luella Gray on December 29, 1948 in Albion, Michigan. Robert was the fourth child and only son in a family of sisters. Bob attended Albion Public Schools and later Albion College before earning a Master's Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. As a child, Bob spent his summers in Bay View, Michigan. Bay View became a lifelong second home with good friends and family, morning tennis games, and chilly water becoming staples in his summers. Bob even managed to survive sharing a cramped cottage, Grayhaven, with four sisters. Later, Bay View became the place where Bob shared memories of his own childhood with his grandchildren. Jonathan learned early on how to recognize a Petoskey stone and the intricacies of the game of tennis, Bob taught Christian how to ride a bike safely through Bay View, built sandcastles alongside Isabella, and made daily treks to the waterfront to chaperone Christian and Isabella's afternoon swim lessons. While working with the Albion Recreation Department, Bob's calm nature and twinkling blue eyes caught the attention of a young woman. The year 1974 was a big one for Bob, as it was the year Robert married Sharon (Gardner) Gray and Robert began his career as a teacher with Albion Public Schools. Robert spent the next 35 years teaching history at Albion High School, sharing his intelligence, wit, and Sports Illustrated covers with generations of young Albion minds. Robert and Sharon welcomed a daughter, Erica Elizabeth, into their family in 1977. In 1980, their second child, David Robert, completed the family. From the beginning of the union between Robert and Sharon, Bob was a loving husband, caring friend, the family handyman, a wonderful grandfather, and later an extraordinary father who loved his family fiercely and would do anything for his children and grandchildren. Upon retirement from an accomplished career in teaching, Bob and Sharon discovered a love of traveling the world. Bob and Sharon would choose a destination, upon which Bob would pull out all the planning and guidebooks to determine exactly what attractions and historical landmarks should be visited. Even after much joking from his children, mainly his daughter-in-law, Bob would just chuckle, give a look with his trademark twinkle in his eye, and begin planning his and Sharon's next traveling adventure. Bob and Sharon's love for seeing the world led them to Russia, where Bob noted that there were a great number of churches, Germany, Austria, Africa-where Bob was the travel anomaly, as the locals couldn't get over how tall Bob was! While seeing the world was both fun and enlightening, Bob also loved to stay closer to home and spend time with Erica, in both New York and more recently, Austin, Texas, and Bob made monthly visits to David and Tasha, but the true intent behind the visits to Indianapolis was to see his three grandchildren whom he adored and whose antics always brought a smile to his face. While Bob will be remembered and loved by many, his memory will be cherished by his wife and best friend of 38 years, Sharon Gray, daughter Erica Elizabeth of Austin, Texas; son, David Robert (Natasha) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Jonathan David, Christian Nathaniel, and Isabella Grace (Indianapolis, IN). Bob is also survived by his sisters Mary Gray of Taos, NM, Martha (Fred) Gray Horn of Denver, CO, and Elizabeth Gray of Ann Arbor, MI. In addition, Bob is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and great friends. A sister, Jane Gray Fahey, father, Ernest Dobson Gray, and mother, Luella Elizabeth Gray, preceded Bob in death. According to his wishes, Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Family and Friends will be Wednesday November 28, 2012 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the ERIE STREET CHAPEL of the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 208 West Erie Street, Albion, Michigan 49224. A Memorial Service will be Wednesday November 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home with Rev. Walter H. Nichols Jr. officiating. Arrangements entrusted to J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 208 West Erie Street, Albion, Michigan 49224. Memorials: Ernie Gray Recreation Endowment Fund, Bay View Association, PO Box 503, Bay View, MI 49770 or First United Methodist Church, 600 East Michigan Avenue, Battle Creek, MI 49224.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Grey family. Mr Grey was the best teacher and made me love learning not only American history but all of our history. He treated all of his students the same, and encouraged us all the same. He was a good kind person, who will be missed.

Bob's US History class was my first substitute teaching assignment, and Bob made a comment, "Just wait until you've been doing it 23 years." I left him a note at the end of the day, "23 years minus one day and counting." I enjoyed knowing him and enjoyed the Sports Illustrated covers lining his classroom walls. Sorry for your loss, Sharon and family. Thank you both for your service to our community.

Mrs. Gray and Family,

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Gray. He was a fine man. I remember him as my teacher, swimming official, and Project Close-Up sponsor. The Project Close-Up experience was one of my most memorable experiences from high school. Mr. Gray will be missed by many. Your family is our thoughts and prayers.

Martha, Sharon, Liz and all other family members--My condolences and prayers for God's love and memories of your loved one to comfort you. The notice from BV caught me totally off guard-I can't believe Bob, or "Bo", as I've always known him, will only be present spiritually next summer. I'll always remember his fabulous no-spin tennis serve and his reception of a particular serve of mine. He was a wonderful person who will be missed by many.

Mr.Gray what a great person he was. When I heard the news I clearly got an image in my head of him standing outside his doorway in the hall, I believe his room was on the east side of the school by Ms. Rohms room. When you walked by he would smile and call you by name and it seemed to make a bad day good just by his big smile. He would speak to every student as they walked by and knew everyone by their name. In the classroom he treated everyone equal and one of the few teachers that I truly enjoyed and looked forward to going to class. Although it has been years since I have seen him, he has left a impact in my life as well as many others from AHS. Thoughts and prayers to his family as they go through this tough time. God Bless Wendy Macomber ( Lutzke) class of '81

So glad to see the mention of Mr. Gray's Sports Illustrated cover collection. I always loved walking into his classroom and seeing that. He made the classroom his own, and a fun place to learn. If a person is lucky, they have one or two teachers in their lifetime who have a profound, life-changing impact on them, and Mr. Gray was one of them for me. He had the ability to recognize a student's potential and challenge them to live up to it. When I was a student in his history class, he saw that I was capable of more than the effort I was giving, and was not shy about letting me know that. He changed the way I approached school in general, and made me a better student. I didn't recognize what he was doing at the time, but figured it out a few years later, and even wrote a paper about it in college. Many years later, I wrote him an email thanking him not only for his guidance to me, but also for his dedication to all of his students. In typical Mr. Gray fashion, his response..."not a problem". Bob Gray, you were a true blessing to Albion students and the community.

I am praying for the peace that passes understanding for all of the Gray family tonight. Mr. Gray was a wonderful teacher and I am thankful that I was able to be in his class. He always had a smile and a positive attitude with all of his students. I am thankful for his influence on my life; he is one of the reasons I became a teacher. Mr. Gray gave me my first opportunity to teach by letting me teach the class one day. He had the classroom everyone wanted to be in--every morning he opened up his classroom to a bunch of giggling, loud girls. For this, and many other reasons, he will be missed.

I was in complete denial when I heard of Mr. Gray's passing. He was always such a great teacher and mentor to me. He always said hi to me and hugged me when he saw me and always knew my name even nearly 25 years after graduation and having seen thousands of students. I am very sorry for your loss and I and my family are praying for your family in this time of great sorrow. He will be greatly missed.

Sharon and family: I was greatly saddened to hear of your loss. I will never forget Bob, and the two years that he coached me. I remember well our trip to the State swim meet. "I fooled around and fell in love" came on the radio, you started singing, and Bob said you were aging yourself. I still laugh about that. I wish I could be at the memorial tomorrow, please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you. Bob was a find man, and he will be greatly missed.

I was privileged to have had Mr. Gray for a teacher in classes at both Washington Gardner Jr. High and Albion High School. Mr. Gray stood out as one of the really good ones. I've had many teachers who presided over a class and whose goal seemed to be to just get through it. Mr. Gray, however, was an "educator" who cared that what was taught was actually absorbed and retained. I've long since forgotten many of my junior high and high school teachers. Mr. Gray, however, I remember, fondly and with respect! My condolences to Mrs. Gray, also a good teacher who I remember, and to the rest of Mr. Gray's family.
