Hazen van den Berg "Van" Hatch Kalamazoo Died October 11, 2013 at age 81. Van was born January 18, 1932 in Marshall, MI to the late Jesse Hazen and Janet (van den Berg) Hatch. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Holmes in 1955. Van practiced law for more than 55 years. He attended Dartmouth College and earned his law degree, with distinction, from the University of Michigan Law School. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Judge Advocate General Corps at the Pentagon. He later served as a delegate to the Michigan Constitutional Convention in 1963. Van was proud to have been a third generation partner of the family law firm, Hatch & Hatch Attorneys at Law. Most recently, he practiced at the firm of Butler, Toweson & Payseno. Van actively pursued his love of golf and fly-fishing throughout his life. Van is survived by his wife, Mary Hatch of Kalamazoo; his children, Mary (James Johnson) Hatch of Columbus, OH and David (Gerry Miller) Hatch of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Harrison, Kate, Becky, Lauren and Chapin; and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding Van in death was his sister, Jan Ordway. Family will greet friends on Thursday from 5-8 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. Memorials may be directed to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Thoughts and prayers from all of us in the Perrett family to all of you. We hold Van in a very special place in our hearts - he was a wonderful cousin, the consummate ethical lawyer, a mentor and friend. He was much loved, revered and respected as a truly gentle man. We will miss him very much.
