Knox, Edna  
Edna Mae Knox Battle Creek Edna Mae Knox, 79, of Battle Creek, died Sunday, January 25, 2015. Edna Mae Knox, the daughter of the late Eugene and Eugene Mack, was born August 12, 1935, in Greenville, Mississippi.  She later moved with her parents to Memphis, Tennessee, where she attended the Memphis Public Schools. She came to Battle Creek, in 1952.  She was employed by the Hart Hotel as a Cook.  She excelled in food planning, preparation and presentation and became a 'Chef'.  She was employed by several restaurants in the Battle Creek area, including the former Sheraton Hotel, Shranks Cafeteria, General Motors of Kalamazoo, Toppers, Don Neal's  and McCamly Plaza Hotel. She united with Upton Avenue Original Church of God and was an active member of the church.  She helped with the Missionary Board during the holidays preparing baskets and she was a member of the Mother's Board. She was a retired member of the Michigan Restaurant Association. She enjoyed watching sports on television and working in her yard, she was an avid gardener, with flower and vegetable gardens second to none.  Mrs. Knox is survived by a son, Johnny (Lou) Knox, II, Benton Harbor, Michigan; daughters, Shirley (Wesley) Hudson, Las Vegas, Nevada, Edna R. "Tootise" Knox Virgil, Vivian Caroll Knox both of Battle Creek; brothers, Andrew (Myra) Mack, Fort Worth, Texas, Reverend W. L. (Sharon) Newton, Sr., Greenville, Mississippi; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Sylvester Knox; grandson, Earnest E. Virgil, IV; sister, Rosie Pearl Carter; and step-father, Archie Carter. Visitation, after 4:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015, T M Hughes-Perry Mortuary. Latty, Michael  
Michael Earle "Mikey" Latty Climax Michael Earle "Mikey" Latty, age 45,  sadly passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor from complications of a very courageous and long fought battle with Leukemia through which Mikey has inspired many.  Mikey was born in Battle Creek on November 8, 1969, the loving son of F. John Repec & Lois C. Latty, and was a member of the Battle Creek Central High School Class of 1988. Mikey married his loving wife, Kristin Marie (Allard) Henning at their home in Climax on February 10, 2012; she survives.  He is also survived by his amazing daughter, Meagan M. Latty of Climax; his step-children, Kacey and James Henning, both of Climax; his mother, Lois Latty; his step-mother, Ginger Repec; his brother, Eric (Marie) Repec and many cherished friends.  Mikey was preceded in death by his dad, John Repec in 2011. Mikey's true passions in life were his family, his friends, and of course, his music.  An incredibly talented musician, Mikey's love for music has truly benefited our local music community.  Over the years, Mikey has played with many area bands, most recently as the drummer with his band, "Unhinged".  Outside of his love for music, Mikey loved tinkering with "His Toys", and spending time with his family and many friends. Mikey's family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek where funeral services to celebrate Mikey's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Siddall of the North Avenue Church of God, officiating.  The family and friends will continue the celebration of Mikey's life immediately following the service at The Music Factory, 191 Angell Street, Battle Creek, MI 49037.  Interment will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Climax.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the In Memory of Mikey Latty Fund thru www.gofundme.com/M-Latty-Memoriam to benefit his daughter, Meagan or to "Be The Match" National Marrow Donor Program thru www.bethematch.org .  Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Lay, Mary  
Mary (Merrie) Rubley Lay Sun City West Mary (Merrie) Rubley Lay, 87, of Sun City West passed away January 20, 2015. She was born in Houston, TX on October 11, 1927 to Erwin and Geraldine (Isom) Rubley. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James S Lay, the love of her life. She is survived by her cousin Dr. William Nettleman and his family of Coldwater, MI, cousin Elsie Bell of Wartrace, TN, brother-in-law Bruce Conklin and and his sons David, Daniel and Kurt of Michigan and many extended family and friends. Following high school, she attended the Ward Belmont College for Young Women (1947). She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education (1949) and received a Masters Science Education from Butler University (1964). She was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. She went on to pursue her passion for education and children leaving a legacy as a kindergarten teacher. She began teaching in Battle Creek, MI and ended in Fresno, CA spanning over 40 years. She was awarded a Life diploma by the State of California in recognition of her 33 years of service. She was a lively, friendly woman with a large circle of friends and many interests. She and her husband Jim enjoyed traveling and spent many happy winters in New Zealand, visiting a former exchange student (Lindy). Among her many contributions to the community, She served two terms as President of the Sun Health Auxiliary (Del E Webb Hospital) and volunteered with hospice. She was a member of PEO.  She was a remarkable person who touched many lives and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 11:00am on Friday, January 30th at Grandview Terrace 14515 W Granite Valley Dr Sun City West, AZ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be offered to Sun Health Senior Living (Grandview Terrace), St. Jude Children's Hospital, the Arizona Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

Martin, Valdine  
Valdine C. "Val" (Keeney) Martin Valdine C. "Val" (Keeney) Martin, formerly of Battle Creek died at Byron Center Manor in Byron Center, MI on Friday, January 23, 2015. Val was born August 10, 1921 in Homer, Michigan to Harold and Lila  (Garey) Keeney.  She was a 1940 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School.  Val was employed part-time at Jacobson's in  Battle Creek for 20 years.  She was secretary to her husband at Martin-Vogt Plating for 6 years; and she was a receptionist at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home 1991-99. Valdine C. Keeney was united in marriage to Donald K. Martin on August 7, 1942 in Battle Creek.  Val was preceded in death by her husband, Don "Babe" Martin on September 7, 2007; and by her daughter, Dianne Kay Shipley on April 14, 1996.  Surviving are her daughter, Carol (Tim) Martin- Haynes of Wyoming, MI, son, Donald G. (Becky) Martin of Tyler, TX; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, and their families.  Val was also preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Karleen and William Blackmar. Val was a former member of the First Congregational Church.  She was a long time and active member of Riverside Country Club and the former Riverside Bowling League.  She was a member of the 487th Bomb Group reunion auxiliary, formerly active in the PTA and co-chaired her 50th high school reunion.  Val enjoyed playing Bridge, golfing, bowling, liked to travel and enjoyed spending time with her family. Friends will be received the hour prior to the service from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek.  Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015.  Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Val may be to the Alzheimer's Association or  the American Cancer Society.  Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com .
