James Yore

James E. Yore

On November 11, 2013, our beloved veteran, James Louis Edward Yore, left this earth to return to his heavenly Father.

James E. Yore, "Big Jim", was born on April 20, 1936 to Edith (Grant) Yore and William E. Yore, Sr. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his two brothers, Donald Yore and William Yore and one of his sisters Theresa Dinkins.

After Big Jim graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1954 as a standout athlete in football, baseball, track and wrestling, he attended Indiana University on a full scholarship. He excelled in football at Indiana University and was signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 1958. Shortly after the signing he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Jim served one tour of duty in the regular army. After his discharge he returned to the NFL and was traded to the New York Giants. He later left the Giants as a free agent and ended his NFL career with the Detroit Lions. He was designated as a fullback, but he could play any position.

A firm believer in education, Big Jim completed his Bachelor's degree at Indiana University and also a Master's from Indiana and later a second Master's from Western Michigan University. He worked as a teacher, a coach and an administrator. His last position was as a program analyst for the Department of Defense at the Federal Center in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Big Jim was a guiding beacon for his family and numerous children in the community. He set an example that has paved the direction for many hearts and minds. A gentleman and a scholar, he was our hero and an outstanding citizen.

Big Jim leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rose Marie, his daughter, Krystal Patrice Yore-Evans (Chad), his stepdaughter, Melissa Beth Mouton, and his stepsons, James Roland Mouton, II. (Shontai), and Frederick Louis Mouton (Sidra). He leaves seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and two sisters, Elise Yore-Williams and Florine Roper. Jim also leaves a host cousins, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends, who will all cherish his memory.

Big Jim believed firmly in education therefore in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James E. Yore Early Childhood Education Fund through the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
