Joan (Ramey) Baber
Joan (Ramey) Baber, age 83, died on July 19, 2013. She was born on December 3, 1929 in Carter County, Kentucky to Virgil and Agnes Ramey.
Joan graduated from Berea College in Kentucky where she met her husband, Charlie Baber. They married in 1952 and moved to Michigan in the early 1960s. She was a Program Director for the Dairy Council of Michigan, teaching nutrition throughout the state for 25 years.
After her retirement in 1984, she continued her lifelong passion for creating pottery under the name of Sugarcamp Pottery. She made pottery and Charlie painted it; together they travelled all over the country selling it at craft shows, including the Marshall Historic Home Tour, Art at the Creek, and Holly Mart.
She was active for years with Battle Creek Junior Theatre, creating and sewing hundreds of costumes. She was a member of the Junior League of Battle Creek, Central Christian Church and the American Association of University Women.
She and Charlie moved to Chicago in 2000 where she was an active participant in a book club, several bridge clubs, and spent time daily with her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters. She was the beloved Gramma and neighbor to a flock of families in "the Baberhood." She hosted holiday meals for numerous Chicago friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie Baber in 2003, and her eldest daughter Robin Baber in 1998. Surviving is her devoted daughter Lynn Baber (Jeff Parker) and the sunshine of her life, her cherished granddaughters Grace and Constance Parker.
A memorial service will be held for Joan Baber on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Christian Church, 713 Riverside Drive in Battle Creek with Reverend Gordon Pippin.
