M. Elizabeth "Betty" Hawk

M. Elizabeth "Betty" Hawk Gull Lake Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Hawk, 91, of Gull Lake, died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at home. She was born August 21, 1921 in Kalamazoo to Arthur and Guelda (Birt) Blakeslee. Betty attended the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and the Garland School in Boston, now Simmons College and graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.A. in French and History. She married Henry C. Hawk on December 22, 1941. He died April 3, 1981. Betty worked as a Red Cross Nurses Aide and in the Red Cross Motor Pool at Bronson Hospital during World War II. An active volunteer, she was a board member of the Michigan Children's Aid Society, the Florence Crittenton Society, Planned Parenthood, Borgess Hospital and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and was a life member of Gull Lake Country Club. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, playing tennis and golf, sailing, playing bridge and the Current Events Club. Surviving are sons, Henry B. (Mary Jo) Hawk, Peter C. (Jo Kathryn Johnson) Hawk and William L. (Candace) Hawk all of Gull Lake; daughter, Laura (Bill) Alsup of Durango, Colorado; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Private family committal will take place at Yorkville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Gull Lake Country Club from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013.
