Arthur Pierson Obituary
Arthur L Pierson, Jr.

Passed away on July 3, 2014 in Bradenton, FL due to complications associated with Parkinson's disease.  Art was born on August 6, 1923 to Hilda and Arthur Pierson in Emporia Kansas. During World War II he served in the Military Police at Ft Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan.  In 1944 he married his high school sweetheart, Maxine Stever of Emporia, Kansas. After the war, Art and Maxine returned to Emporia where Art was the manager of a local dry cleaner and laundry. He and Maxine vacationed in Michigan and in 1952 Art was hired at the Kellogg company which came with a move to Battle Creek.  He worked his way through the ranks at Kellogg's and served as the head of the Industrial Engineering department. It was in Battle Creek where he raised his children and spent many days fishing at Mill Lake. He loved to have his friends and neighbors over for a fish fry to show how good a truly fresh fish really tasted.  He retired from Kellogg's in 1980 and is a member of the 25 Year Club. Art cared for Maxine in the last difficult years of her life as she was slowly consumed by rheumatoid arthritis.  In July 1989 Art remarried long time friend of the Pierson family, Ellen Larsen.  Art and Ellen traveled to many places including Branson, MO, Bradenton, FL and Denmark. They eventually became "snow birds" and traveled to Bradenton in the winters only returning to Michigan in the spring when the snow was long gone.  After nearly twenty-two years of marriage, Ellen passed away in April 2011.

When he wasn't fishing, Art was active in the Battle Creek food bank and created lapidary jewelry. He was a member of the ELKS in Michigan, the George Custer Post 44, and the Moose Lodge in Florida. He was also a member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Bradenton.

He started playing the trombone at Emporia High School and never stopped. He played in the Post band, various concert bands and perhaps most memorable, the Phoenix Big Band.

Art is survived by one daughter, Janine Pierson of Studio City, CA, one son, Dr. Jay Arthur Pierson of Raleigh, NC, a brother, Norbert Pierson of Columbia, MO and many nieces and nephews.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Lois McNelly, Carol Pierson, Delores Fisher and a brother, Robert Pierson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday July 8, 2014 at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church located at 5115 Cortez Road in Bradenton.

There will also be a visitation at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd.  in Battle Creek, MI on Thursday, July 10th from 6 -8 pm. There will be a graveside service at Ft Custer National cemetery at noon on Friday July 11th.

Donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 5115 Cortez Road West, Bradenton FL 34210 or a Parkinson's research group of your choosing. www.bachmanhebble.com.
