Elder Arthur Rhan, Sr.

Battle Creek

Elder Arthur O. Rhan, Sr., 87, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, January 31, 2015.

Elder Rhan, the son of the late Loyd E. and Mae Rhan, Sr., was born September 23, 1927, in Battle Creek, Michigan.  He attended the Battle Creek Schools and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School.  He later attended Wayne State University, and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Anthropology.

He served in the United States Army, during World War II.  He was an engineer and received an Honorable Discharge having attained the rank Lieutenant.  He was employed by the State of Michigan, in the Human Resources Department, retiring in March of 1988, with thirty years of Service.

Elder Rhan was baptized as a child in the  Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was a member of the Youth Usher Board  and sang in the choir.  In 1959, he joined Hamblin Avenue Original Church of God, under the leadership of Bishop Harold W. Speights.   He was ordained in April of 1961.  He was the Pastor of the Original Church of God, Chicago, Illinois, from 1975 to 1991. He became the Pastor of  Upton Avenue Original Church of God in 1991.  Upton Avenue has operated a Feeding Program since 1996, serving a hot meal every Tuesday, to anyone who came.

Elder Rhan  was an active member of the Untied Community Ministerial Alliance, where he served as President for two years and Vice-President for one year.  He served as in Instructor for the Red Cross.

Elder Rhan was married to the former Judith Norman for fifty-six years, March 24, 1957 to April 28, 2013, when she proceeded him in death.

Elder Rhan is survived by a son, Arthur (Alecia) Rhan, Jr. of Battle Creek, sister, Rena Jones of Ann Arbor, Michigan, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by daughter, Terri Denise Toombs, in 2010, and brother, Loyd E. Rhan, Jr., in  2014.

Visitation, after 4:00 pm, Friday, February 6, 2015, Upton Avenue Original Church of God, 270 Upton Avenue.

Twilight Memorial Service, 6:00 p.m. Friday, Upton Avenue Original Church of God.

Funeral Service, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015, Upton Avenue Original Church of God.

Interment, Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
