Barbara Hart Obituary
Barbara J. Hart

Battle Creek

Barbara J. Hart, age 87, of Battle Creek passed away October 3, 2015 at Bronson At Home Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.

Barbara was born on February 21, 1928 in Battle Creek to Maurice and Ruby Mae (Mayo) Norton. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1946.

As many of her family, Barbara had an adventurous spirit which led her to become a member of the United States Foreign Service.   She signed up with three of her friends to join and Barbara ended up being the only one of the three that didn't chicken out!  Barbara lived in the American Compound and worked as a Clerk Typist for the foreign service in Japan, near Tokyo from 1952-1954.

She returned to Battle Creek and went to work for Price-Waterhouse CPA's. Barbara married Lawrence E. Hart on December 16, 1956 in Angola, Indiana. After the birth of her first son, James, Barbara stayed at home to raise their children.

In 1970, Lawrence was in a serious and disabling car accident.    True to her character, Barbara took on the role as caregiver along with wife, caring for her husband who was confined to a wheelchair.  Barbara lived a full life, as did Lawrence thanks to her determination.  She and Lawrence took many trips to see family and see the sights.  Lawrence preceded her in death in December of 1997.

She was an Avon representative for over 35 years, and a DeMolay mom.  Barbara was a very generous and colorful lady. If you complimented her on a scarf or piece of jewelry that you liked, you most likely wore it home!  She was a wonderful grandmother who kept track of the grandchildren's activities carefully.  She would quiz them over the telephone before their spelling tests till she was satisfied they were ready for the main event!  Barbara enjoyed crocheting baby blankets for the Charitable Union and playing Bunco.

She is survived by her sons, James E. "Jim" (LeAnn) Hart of Clyde Township, and Donald A. "Don" (Deborah) Hart of North Hollywood, CA; her grandchildren, Amy L. (Matthew) Hammerle of Prince Junction, NJ, and Andrew J. Hart of Port Huron; the apples of her eye, her great-grandchildren, Annabelle Hammerle and Abigail Hammerle; her brother, Donald (Marianne) Norton of Battle Creek; nieces and nephews, and dear friends, David and Dana Christman of Battle Creek, who were the reason Barbara was able to stay in her home as long as she did as her health failed. Her family will always be grateful to the Christman's.  Barbara was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Robert Norton and Richard Norton.

Friends may call at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Shaw Chapel, 2838 Capital Avenue SW, Battle Creek on Friday, October 9, where her family will be present to greet friends and share memories from 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM.  A Celebration of Barbara's life will take place at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Shaw Chapel at 11AM on Saturday, October 10.
