Berry Obituary
E. Lavon Berry

Battle Creek

E. Lavon Berry, 94, a lifelong Battle Creek resident died February 23, 2016 at Bronson at Home Hospice Residence.  Lavon was born in Battle Creek on August 20, 1921 to Merris Lavina Meek and Edward Earl McCarthy.  She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Herbert and Merris Lavina (Meek) Schwartz.  Lavon grew up in Battle Creek and was a 1938 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School.  She was employed for two years by Attorney Andrew Cook, who was counsel for Michigan National Bank, and after some time Lavon was asked to transfer to the Michigan National Bank Mortgage Department, where she worked for five years.  E. Lavon McCarthy married Orvis L. Berry on July 22, 1939 in Battle Creek.  After Orvis returned from serving with the U.S. Army Air Force in World WII, he and Lavon settled down with their infant daughter, Lois.  Soon Lavon was expecting again, this time twins, Sandy and Carol, so she decided to no longer work at the bank, but to dedicate her life to caring for her family.

Lavon was preceded in death by Orvis, her husband of 75 years on September 28, 2014.  Surviving are three daughters, Lois Ann (Eldon) Thompson and Sandy Lee (Donia) Berry, both of San Diego, CA, and Carol Lynne (Daniel) Monette of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Kenneth (Myrna) Dontje of Chula Vista, CA, Shannon (Jason) Hunter of Raleigh, NC, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Eric (Chris) Thompson of Washington D.C., David (Ai) Thompson of Honolulu, Hawaii; nine great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, Lavon was also preceded in death by her mother and father; stepfather and stepmother, Herbert and Leotah Schwartz.

Lavon was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher; a member and former president of the Presbyterian Women; and a Circle member for over 60 years and a former member of the Ruth Circle. Lavon was a longtime chairman of the hospital gift shop, beginning at the former Community Hospital, then at Leila and Battle Creek Health System when the hospitals merged and lastly at Bronson Battle Creek.  Lavon loved traveling with Orvis and some of her most memorable trips were one including Australia, New Zeeland and Fuji and another to Norway.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Friday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, 105 Capital Ave N.E. Battle Creek.  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the funeral home, with Rev Pat J. Weatherwax officiating.  Interment is to be made at Memorial Park Cemetery, next to her husband Orvis.  Friends who wish may make memorial contribution to First Presbyterian Church, Humane Society of S.C. MI or to Bronson at Home Hospice Residence.
