Calvin "Cal" Meekhof Obituary
Calvin "Cal" Meekhof Calvin "Cal" Meekhof, founder of Meekhof Tire Sales and Service, Inc. was called Home on December 22, 2013 at age 87. He is now reunited with his wife Bea Meekhof, whose death on June 8, 2012 left him without a compass. Cal was born into a farming family in McBain, Michigan, where his job as a youth was to clear rocks from the fields prior to planting. Although he loved working with his hands, farm chores held no appeal for him. When he came of age, Cal left "The University of McBain" for Grand Rapids, where he married, raised three children and ultimately started a successful business. Although he left the farm, the farm never left Cal. He collected rocks his entire life and delighted in riding the John Deere around his acre and a half. His embellished stories of farm life amused two generations of children. Cal was a kind, big-hearted man who could carry an interesting conversation with anyone. He read business journals, biographies and history. He loved music, attending symphony and opera for many decades. Beethoven, Van Cliburn, Pavarotti were for him divine inspirations, as was Johnny Cash. The trait he bequeathed to his children was the value of an honest day's work. Cal worked full-time through his 85th birthday until failing health and his wife's death necessitated a change. His life will be cherished by his children and grandchildren: Dyanna L. Meekhof of Grand Rapids; Patricia S. Meekhof of Richland, MI and her children, MacKenzie and Logan; and Calvin J. "Butch" and Ruth Meekhof of Grand Rapids and their children, Meghan and Bob Callery, Hilary and Mike Ragesdale, and Caleb Meekhof. Also surviving are Cal's siblings: Milton and Bernice Meekhof; Joyce and Bob DeKraker; Ang and Ray Elenbaas; Don Meekhof and Carl and Nancy Meekhof. The Meekhof family wishes to thank the 4th floor staff of Raybrook Manor for their compassionate care of our father and grandfather during the last year. For the faithful visitors who provided companionship, we are grateful. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 31 at East Leonard Christian Reformed Church, 1027 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids, where Cal was a member for over 60 years. The family will greet friends and relatives at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St., Grand Rapids, on Monday, December 30 from 4 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions in Cal's memory may be made to the Grand Rapids Symphony.
