Constance "Connie" Diane (nee Parlin) Bates

Athens Township

Constance "Connie" Diane (nee Parlin) Bates, 79, of Athens Township went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.  She died peacefully at home due to respiratory failure.  Connie is survived by her soul mate and loving husband, Bruce Reeves Bates and children Dorie (Paul) Turpin of Madison, WI, and Brent (Julia Reilly) of Kalamazoo.  A wonderful daughter, Beth Ann (Rick) Hunter, preceded Connie in death on August 7, 2014. 

Connie was born to Liston Parlin and biological mother Virginia Strandberg on January 22, 1937 in Lansing, Michigan.  She was raised by her grandfather and aunt, Carl and Margaret Strandberg, as well as much-beloved foster parents, Doris and Orville Angell.  All of them preceded Connie in death.

Connie was also preceded in death by in-laws, Gale and Eupha (Vosburg) Bates; foster sister, Taffy Angell Hernandez; brother-in-law, John Bates; sister-in-law, Bonnie (Halder) Bates; and niece, Amanda Markham Bryant.

Connie is survived by sister, Patricia (Larry) Markham of Battle Creek; foster sister, Kandy (Stu) Angell Ackley of Battle Creek; brother- and sister-in-law Ralph and Vicki Bates of Athens; sister-in-law, Patricia Bates Edwards of Athens; son-in-law, Rick Hunter of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Jennie (Mark) Williamson of Athens, Jammie (Mike) Cone  of Oldsmar, FL, Ricky Hunter of Athens, Bethany and Lucas Turpin of Madison, WI, and Jared Bates, Rachel (Trey) Baring and Jacob Bates, all of Austin, TX; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Cody, Morgan and Grady Williamson, and Mason and Josie Constance Cone; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Connie and Bruce were married on January 29, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Athens.

Connie enjoyed spending time with her family, kids she once babysat for, and many friends and relatives.   The Roe and Wickey families and Sharon Bennett have been special friends to Connie and Bruce.  She loved to cook and was famous for her "butter horn" rolls and homemade fruit roll-ups.  She also enjoyed gardening, canning, crafting and card playing.  She and Bruce were fans of gospel, country and bluegrass music. She was a devoted Sunday school teacher and Cub Scout leader.  She and Bruce attended North Athens Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 3, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation, located 3 miles east of M-66 on M-60, in Union City.  A funeral will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at North Athens Baptist Church, 2020 M Drive South.  Interment will follow at 3:00 PM at Leroy Congregational Cemetery in Leroy Township.
