Daryl Allen Leatherbury

The Dalles, OR

Daryl Allen Leatherbury, 89, a resident of The Dalles, Oregon for the past three years, went to be with his Lord, passing peacefully among family at The Oregon Veterans' Home on Wednesday morning, October 8, 2014.

He was born in Bronson, Michigan on November 9, 1924, the younger of two children born to Clyde J. and Lena (Foote) Leatherbury.  He grew up in Tekonsha, Michigan where he graduated from Tekonsha High School in 1942.  He lived there sixty years; forty-five of those years at his much loved Vincent Lake. 

He enlisted in and served in WWII in the Army Air Corps, stationed primarily on Guam.  Following the war, he married his best friend, Mary E. Baker on May 19, 1946. 

He was a printer by trade, working many years for Standard Printing of Marshall, Michigan as a linotype operator and, later, for Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan working in the company's print shop. 

He was an honorary member of the World War I National Association of American Balloon Corps Veterans for whom he published a newspaper for many years, of which all editions currently reside in the Smithsonian.

Daryl is survived by his two sons and their wives, Richard and Ann Leatherbury of The Dalles, Oregon and Craig J and Barbara Leatherbury of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren, Nicole Sorenson, Jackelyn Ryan, Angela Leatherbury and Cody J. Leatherbury; and three great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Arthur and Alice Ryan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents and his sister Madge Boyd.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Tekonsha with a luncheon following at the Union Church-United Church of Christ in Tekonsha.
