David Max Burkwalt


David Max Burkwalt, 74, died on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Burkwalt was born on August 17, 1940 at the family's house at Duck Lake.  He attended Albion Schools.  On November 25, 1960 he married Jewell Case in Albion.

Mr. Burkwalt worked for Quality Asphalt in Homer for several years and retired in 2012.  He also worked many years at Brooks Foundry in Albion until the plant closed, and at Harvard Industries in Albion until that plant closed.  Mr. Burkwalt was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed rescuing animals, collecting guns, watching western movies, and riding on his Indian Motorcycle. Mr. Burkwalt enjoyed working on cars, machinery, and diesel engines. He was skilled with his hands and worked many years often seven days a week to provide for his family. Neighbors would bring their cars, lawn mowers, and even bicycles to his home to have him take a look at them. Besides being a automotive mechanic he also was a Millwright with the UAW.

He is survived by his wife Jewell of Homer; children, William Isaac (Gail) Burkwalt of Homer and Candy Lynn (Leland) Higaki of Rapid City, South Dakota; grand children Jenise MewCam Higaki, David Takimura (Crystal Hocking) Higaki, and Ryan (Jennifer) Dye of Marshall; a great-granddaughter Riley Dye; siblings, Eleanor (Lawrence) Brown of Marengo, Art (Jerry) Burkwalt of Springport, and Dannie (Wallean) Burkwalt of Homer.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wanda Brown; and brother, Harold Burkwalt.

Visitation will take place at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel, 303 South Hillsdale Street, Homer on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 from 2-8pm with family present to greet friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.  Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 11am on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel with Reverend Robert Stover officiating.  Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.  Family will gather with friends following the committal services at the Homer United Methodist Church 101 E Adams St, Homer.  Memorial contributions are requested to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan or to the Homer United Methodist Church.  Leave a personal message for the family and sign the online guest book at www.kempffuneralhome.com
