Donald Sherman Obituary
Donald "Don" Paul Sherman

Carbondale, CO

Donald "Don" Paul Sherman, avid golfer, living room symphony conductor, armchair life coach, loving husband, father and grandfather died Saturday, July 25, 2015 at his home in Carbondale, Colorado.

Don was born August 11, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York to John and Anne (Ott) Sherman and graduated from Garden City High School in 1953. After being stationed in Germany while serving in the Army, he returned to New York where he received a B.A. in English from Hofstra University in 1959. Don managed systems and technology for a number of insurance companies in New York City, including Metropolitan Life where his parents had met each other three decades prior and where he met Carol Levine, whom he married on August 28, 1969 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Don was transferred from Manhattan to Federal Home Insurance in Battle Creek in 1974 where he was promoted to Vice President.

Don retired in 1990 to focus on doing the things he loved: spending time with family, playing golf at the Battle Creek Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors, and captaining his pontoon boat on Goguac Lake. Retiring also allowed him to spend more time taking part in civic activities, including serving as President of the Board at the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and President of the Board at Battle Creek Child Guidance. Don also enjoyed reading the New York Times, writing the occasional letter to the editor to the amusement of all who knew him and spending time with friends playing pool.

Don and his wife Carol moved from Battle Creek to Carbondale, Colorado in October, 2014 to be closer to family.

Don is survived by Carol, his wife of 46 years; his son Michael (Denver, Colorado); his son Daniel, Daniel's wife Candace and their baby boy Parker (Aspen, Colorado); and his sister Nancy Johnston (Gainesville, Virginia). Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack.

Memorials may be made in Don Sherman's name to the Battle Creek Symphony, P.O. Box 1613, Battle Creek, MI 49016.
