Elizabeth Holt Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" M. Holt

Elizabeth "Betty" M. Holt, age 98, formerly of Battle Creek, Michigan, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 10, 2013, while she was in residency at The Fountains at Bronson Place Inn, in Kalamazoo.  Her family cherishes the memories of Elizabeth's faithful love for all, which were rooted in Jesus' faithful love for her.

Elizabeth was born November 27, 1914, in McArthur, Ohio, to the late Michael and Catherine (Mikulich) Cunic.  When she was 15 years old, she and her family moved near Gun Lake in Michigan.  When she was 19 she moved to Detroit to care for the children of Dr. and Mrs. Bauer.  While there she also graduated from the Ina Del Mar School of Cosmetology.  After graduation she purchased and operated the Diane Beauty Shop located in Battle Creek.  Later in life, Betty worked as the receptionist for the Ferrari Beauty Shop in Battle Creek.

While in Battle Creek she met her future loving husband, Gordon L. Holt, from Athens.  They were united in holy matrimony on September 20, 1941.  Betty and Gordon would have celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary this year.

After their marriage, Betty sold her beauty shop in Battle Creek and then purchased and operated a beauty shop in Athens, for a short time.  Betty followed Gordon to various cities in Michigan as his employment called, including Flint in 1941, back to Battle Creek in 1945, to Albion in 1951, back to Battle Creek in 1953, to Marshall in 1966, and back to Battle Creek, where they retired in 1979.  In 2011, Betty and Gordon moved to The Fountains at Bronson Place, in Kalamazoo.

In 1949, Elizabeth became a member of the First Congregational Church of Battle Creek.  She was a past member of the Chapel Circle and regularly attended the Couples Club gatherings with Gordon.  Betty also served as a past member of the Business Professional Women's Club, and for six years as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Abscota Extension.  She was active in the Lakeview PTA and a group leader in the Campfire and Cub Scouts' organizations.

Betty and Gordon enjoyed playing cards and bingo, listening to music, dining out and going on group tours during their retirement years.  Betty also enjoyed her serving of ice cream every day.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon.  She is survived by her son and his wife, Ryan and Janet Holt, of Portage; her daughter, Karen Holt, of Portage; two grandchildren, Haven (Abraham) Essenmacher, of Virginia Beach, VA,  and formerly of Portage, and Brenton Holt (Sheri Louk), of Kalamazoo; five great-granddaughters, Brooke and Haleigh Chapman, of Virginia Beach,  and formerly of Portage, Ashley Holt, of Kalamazoo, Dawn Stafford of Kalamazoo, and Krystal Louk of Kalamazoo and one great-grandson, Dugan Holt, of Kalamazoo.  She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  Elizabeth was the sole surviving sibling of eleven brother and sisters from the Cunic family.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Shaw Funeral Home, 2838 Capital Avenue S.W., Battle Creek, MI.  A service of celebration of Elizabeth's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the funeral home with Reverend Tom Ryberg, of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ officiating.

The family requests donations be made to memorial funds in Elizabeth's name,
