Battle Creek

Evelyn L. Buckenberger, 82, of Battle Creek died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Buckenberger was born on October 17, 1932 in Lawton to Roy and Marian (Rodgers) Baldwin.  She graduated from Albion High School and would later graduate from Central Michigan University.  On July 18, 1964 she married James E. Buckenberger in Marshall, MI.

Mrs. Buckenberger was an Elementary School Teacher for 31 years retiring in 1988.  She worked for Barry County, Grand Rapids Schools, and she retired from Harper Creek Schools.  She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.  She volunteered for a number of activities and groups at church including teaching Vacation Bible School, Altar Guild, Funeral Dinners and Taste of Germany.  She also was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, ABC Quilts and a 20-year volunteer for the Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary Toy Guild.  Her love of arts, crafts, sewing and quilting contributed to a lengthy membership in ABC Quilts; an organization that makes and distributes quilts to children in need.  Mrs. Buckenbeger enjoyed spending time with her family especially with her granddaughter.

She is survived by her husband, James of Marshall; children, David (Marianne) Buckenberger of Brighton and Kristina Buckenberger of Marshall; a granddaughter Gabrielle Buckenberger of Brighton; sisters, Georgia (Larry) Bearman of Dayton, Tennessee, and Beverly (Paul) Patterson of Grand Rapids; a brother Rodger (Janet) Baldwin of Tempe, Arizona; brother-in-law Herbert Colwell of Battle Creek and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Polly Colwell of Battle Creek.

Visitation will take place at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel 723 US 27 north Marshall on Friday, June 26 from 2:00pm-8:00pm with family present to greet friends 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm.  Funeral services celebrating her life will take place at 10:00am on Saturday, June 27 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 135 West Green Street, Marshall, with Reverend Anthony R. Voltattorni officiating.  Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.  Family will gather with friends following the committal service at the Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.  Memorial contributions are requested to the Bronson At Home Hospice or to the Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary.  Assistance with memorials is available the Kempf Funeral Home.  Leave a personal message for the family and sign the online guest book at www.kempffuneralhome.com
