Gary A. Hughes, 85, of Battle Creek, died Monday, November 17, 2014 unexpectedly at home.

He was born November 16, 1929 at Nichols Hospital in Battle Creek to Kenneth and Florence (Fruin) Hughes..     

Gary graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1948 where he played the trumpet in the Bearcat band.  He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during the Korean War

He enjoyed trains at a young age and as he grew older he still loved them, opening a train shop in Battle Creek called The Train Place for many years where he had a devoted following of train buffs and enthusiasts.

He also played trumpet in the U.S. Army Band, the Post Band, and the Marshall Community Band for many years.  He organized a big band while living in Florida and gave trumpet lessons for many years.  He also enjoyed golf, sports cars, watching the Tigers and Lions, and going to the casino.

Gary is survived by his longtime companion Anna Belle Bennett of Battle Creek; sister Jean Nemrava of Battle Creek; and long time friend Penny Peterson.  He was preceded in death by his parents and long time golf partner Ed Nemrava.

Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Shaw Funeral Home with services at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Kelly Hadlich officiating. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, Michigan, at a later date.  Memorial contributions may go to a .
