George Edward "Ed" Haring

George Edward "Ed" Haring, 71, passed away on Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 at home in the loving care of his family. 

Ed was born on September 13, 1945 to George Kenneth and Gladys Grace (Shawver) Haring in Francesville, IN, where he grew up. After graduating from Francesville High School, Ed attended Indiana State University where he received both a Bachelor's and a Master's of Science Degree in Physics. Post-graduation, Ed and his wife Marsha Franke (deceased) moved to Elgin, Illinois where they started their family and had their three children; Chelsea, Drew, and Erin. While in Elgin, Ed discovered his passion for lifelong learning in higher education. In 1978, he began his 30+ year career at Elgin Community College, where he served as an instructor, Director of Faculty Development, Dean, and Assistant Vice President of Instruction. During these years, he also became a community advocate who volunteered his time with organizations such as the Kairos Family Center, Indo-Chinese Refugee Services, and the YWCA as an ESL teacher and childbirth educator. 

Ed and his family moved to Battle Creek in 1987 in pursuit of his lifelong goal of becoming a community college president. During this time, he earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Iowa. He began working for Kellogg Community College, where he spent the next 23 years dedicated to making higher education more accessible and more effectively aligned with the changing demands of the 21st Century. In 2004, Ed achieved his dream and honorably served as President of KCC until his retirement in 2010.  He also continued his work as a community leader working closely with organizations such as the United Way of Greater Battle Creek and Battle Creek Unlimited. 

While in Battle Creek, Ed met Terry Lee Eichorst and in 2003 the two married and he became the step-father to Tami Jo (Ben) Brightrall and Nic Eichorst. The couple has enjoyed traveling many places together especially Zancudo, Costa Rica and spending time with family on St. Mary's Lake. Beyond traveling, Ed enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching auto races, reading, spending time with his grandkids, and telling jokes.

Ed is survived by his wife, Terry; children, Chelsea, Erin, Tami Jo, and Nic; grandchildren; and his six sisters. He was proceeded in death by his father, George Kenneth Haring; Mother, Gladys Grace Haring, and; son, Drew Justin Haring.  

Ed lived a fulfilling and inspiring life which will be celebrated at a gathering of friends and family on Friday, October 21, 2016 at KCC's Binda Theatre from 4:30- 630 p.m.
