Grover Dotson Obituary
Grover Lee Dotson, Sr.

Grover Lee Dotson, Sr. departed this life early Thursday morning, October 24, 2013 in Battle Creek, Michigan with his sons at his bedside. He was 81 years old. Born April 6, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee, Grover was the sixth child and youngest boy of seven children blessed to Chifton and Hattie Dotson. He married Bessie Marqueener Collins of Wardtown, Virginia on December 22, 1955 and moved to Battle Creek, Michigan. To this union four sons were born.

In 1951, Grover graduated from Geeter High School and began to seek out employment. A job referral from the Memphis Veterans Administration Hospital led to an opportunity in Michigan. Grover journeyed north and took full advantage of the opportunity, working as a nurse aide while furthering his education at Western Michigan College (later, Western Michigan University).

In 1956, Grover completed his studies at WMC (among the first African Americans to do so), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as his clinical pathologist certification, MT (ASCP). Over the next 33 years, Grover's career as a laboratory scientist would see him rise to the rank of Chief Medical Technologist at the VA Medical Center. Concurrently, Grover also worked as a clinician at several other area medical facilities, including Fort Custer State Home, Lakeview General Hospital, and Galesburg Clinic prior to his retirement from his profession in 1990. In addition to his professional obligations, Grover remained a vital and active member of the community through affiliations with Level Park Little League, Urbandale Kiwanis (past President), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, and the Battle Creek Public School System. Through the years, as a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. church, Grover served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, and most prominently, Chairman of the Steward Board. Perhaps most cherished is the roll Grover played in the Battle Creek Public School System as a teacher and volunteer. He particularly enjoyed the interaction he received with students through the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science program.

Throughout his life, Grover consistently demonstrated unwavering Christian values, stemming back to his early childhood. He tirelessly advocated service to church, community, and particularly the youth. Grover was selfless in giving of his time, talent and wisdom. Truly he was a "Man of Principle", and that is his enduring legacy. "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches..." Proverbs 22:1a (KJV)

Surviving are sons, Pastor Grover Lee (Essie) Dotson, Jr. of Canton, Michigan; Dr. Glenn Averil (Karen) Dotson of Chandler, Arizona; Dr. Gregory Duane (Sonja) Dotson of Battle Creek, Michigan; Drs.
