Harry B. Bechtol Athens Harry Burdette Bechtol, 91, of Athens, died February 1, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. He was born August 18, 1921, the son of Harry and Hazel (Miller) Bechtol in Battle Creek. Harry served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China, Burma, India theatre. He then worked as a carpenter until retiring from Carpenter's Union Local 871in 1984. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alfreda L. (Long) Bechtol of Athens; daughter, Laura (Mark) Kelly of Athens; son, Jim Bechtol of Athens; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister, Dareda Benton of Pennfield; brothers, Leroy (Shirley) Bechtol, Frank (Toni) Bechtol of Pennfield and Jack (Kay) Bechtol of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Bechtol in 1963 and his parents. Harry enjoyed playing the guitar and writing songs (he wrote over 600 poems during his life), woodworking in his shop, gardening and puttering on his "mini-farm." The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at North Athens Baptist Church where services will take place at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Marvin Savola and Rev. Jim Augustine officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorial contributions may go to North Athens Baptist Church, 2020 M Drive South, Athens.
