Hazel D. Ebert Battle Creek Hazel Dean Ebert, 89, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. She was born July 29, 1923, the daughter of John R. and Gertrude A. (Rea) Gulley in Benton, Illinois. Her family moved to Battle Creek when Hazel was three. Hazel graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1941. She married Peter J. Ebert on February 28, 1942 and they were married for 65 years when Peter died in 2007. She was very active in Battle Creek, serving as the first president of the Westlake School PTA in 1960; she worked in the Lakeview Schools cafeteria from 1962 until 1969; she worked on many city, school and state elections and then worked as a secretary at Central Christian Church from 1975 until 1998 providing 23 years of faithful service. Hazel enjoyed singing with Morning Musical group and with her church choir. She also taught Sunday School at Central Christian Church, was a member of the ladies' aid group as well as a faithful church member. In addition she enjoyed sewing, doing crossword puzzles, reading and sending words of encouragement to her friends and family. Hazel was a very devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Jim) Hurley, Susan (Jerry) Cooley and Jeanette (Ken) Roebuck, all of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Connie (Bob) Lorick, Kathy (Chris) Martin, all of Arlington, Texas, Christopher Hoag currently serving in USAF, Dr. Timothy (Gabriela) Minniear of Memphis, Tennessee and Dr. Adam (Chin-Chin) Minniear of Alexandria, Virginia; great grandchildren, Kyle Martin, Brad Martin, Laura Burdette and Jedidiah Minniear; brothers, Duwayne Gulley of Battle Creek, Jim Gulley of Alamogordo, New Mexico and sister, Anita Embury, Arcadia, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; parents and sister, Roberta Quick. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Shaw Funeral Home. Services will take place 12:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2013 at Central Christian Church with Gordon Pippin, Kingery Clingenpeel and Lowell Kosak providing eulogies. Interment, Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may go to Central Christian Church or Great Lakes Christian College.
