Helen Banfield Obituary
Helen M. Banfield

Helen May (Face) Banfield, 92, of Marshall died surrounded by four generations of family Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.

She was born January 19, 1922 at home on a cold winter day near Homer.  She weighed only three pounds and was two months premature…so they wrapped her up, placed her on the back of the wood stove and called the family to come and see her quickly because she surely wouldn't live very long.

After graduating from Marshall High School, Helen found work at Mae Banfield's Tea Room where she met the love of her life, Arthur Banfield.  When Arthur was drafted into the Army for World War II they decided to wait for him to come home before getting married on January 19, 1946.  She worked at Eaton Manufacturing throughout the war and joined Arthur as a partner in farming.  When they bought their farm on 14 ½ Mile Road, Helen needed to work "in town" to help cover the mortgage.  She worked for Dr. Myron Tazelaar as a receptionist for 17 years.

Helen was active with Lyon Lake Church, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Marshall United Methodist Church, Marshall Monday Club and American Legion Auxilliary.  She loved listening to and watching the Detroit Tigers, playing Scrabble with family and friends and staying in touch with her family and friends with letters and Helen-made cards.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur in 2001; her grandson, Brent Woodard; her brothers, Donald Face, Neil Face; and sister, Francis Costianes.  She is survived by her sons, Durrell (Mary) Banfield of Mt. Pleasant, Tim (Anne) Banfield of Marshall; daughter, Kathy (T. R.) Shaw of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Kim (Steve) Osterholder, Kris (Ron) Ratkos, Melissa (Brian) Higgins, Josch (Stacie) Banfield; 13 great grandchildren, Hannah (Jesse) Simmons, Paul Woodard, Daniel, Emily, Elizabeth, and Amy Joy Ratkos; Jonathan Babcock, Emma, Daisy, Jack, and Lucy Higgins; Kellan and Graysan Banfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen's family wishes to thank the caregivers at Oaklawn Hospital and Marshall Nursing and Rehabilitative Center.  Our community is blessed with compassionate friends and neighbors.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek.  A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Marshall United Methodist Church with Pastor Pat Bromberek officiating.  Memorials may go to Marshall United Methodist Church or American Legion Post 79, 1320 S Kalamazoo, Marshall, MI 49068.

The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek.
