Janet M. (Pettit) Detweiler

Age 89, passed away on Aug. 14, 2014, in Battle Creek.She was a dearly loved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt, and a wonderful friend to many. She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Ishpeming MI, to parents Anna (Roberts) and Francis V. Pettit.

Her family lived in Ishpeming, Omer, and then Fairview, MI where she graduated from high school in 1942, and met her sweetheart and future husband of 57 years, Carl Detweiler. Janet attended Bay City Business College, in Lansing, MI. She and Carl were married June 27, 1946. They lived in New Haven, CT and Lansing, MI, before moving to Battle Creek in 1949.

Janet worked as a secretary for Clark Equipment Co., the Battle Creek Sanitarium Hospital, Leila Arboretum Society, Kelly Home Care Services and as a taster for Kellogg Company. For years, she operated 'Butterflies & Blossoms', creating beautiful pictures with dried flowers and butterflies, to sell at area art & craft shows.

She was very active as a parent in the Battle Creek Public Schools and also involved with 4-H, Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. She was a member of the Calhoun County Young Republicans, the Sweet Adeline's Chorus, the Women's National Farm & Garden Association, a synchronized swimming team, a gourmet club, and the Brigham Chapter of the Audubon Society.  She had been an active member of Urbandale United Methodist and Westlake Presbyterian churches, singing in both choirs. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, gardening, reading, genealogy, and watching Detroit baseball.

She was a founding member of Leila Arboretum Society, serving on the board for 12 years, and as president. She helped plant trees and create wildflower trails and gardens. An honorary Master Gardener, she deeply loved sharing her knowledge of gardening, trees, birds and the natural world.

Janet is survived by her children: Thomas (Wendy) Detweiler of Grass Valley, CA; Ann Porter of Battle Creek; Jeff (Andrew Rupp) Detweiler of Seattle, WA; and Janet (Mark) Wilson of Battle Creek; her grandchildren: Noah (Jess) Porter, Jessica (Eric) Malinowski, Kate (Jason) Rood, Nicole Armour, Kimberly Wilson; five great-grandchildren; sisters Helen Zenker and  Patricia Rogers; in-laws John and Luetta Detweiler, Reuel and Sara Detweiler, Lowell and Ruth Detweiler; and many nieces and nephews.  . She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl Detweiler, sister Jean Smith and brother Francis Pettit

You are welcome to visit with the family on Thursday, August 21, from 4-7 p.m. at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd. A celebration of her life will take place at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 157 Chapel Hill Dr. Battle Creek, at Noon on Saturday, August 23.  Memorial donations may be made to Leila Arboretum Society.
