It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Jeffrey Scott Rice, age 58, announces the passing of our dear son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend who passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in Battle Creek, MI.

He was born June 22, 1955 in Great Lakes, IL the son of George Martin Rice and Arline J.  (Lindholm) Rice.

 Jeff was a self-employed contractor with the Rice Siding company for over 30 years; he retired due to ill health in 2011.

He is survived by his mother: Arline J.  Rice of Battle Creek, MI; his brother: George F. & Joan Vanderford (fiancé) Rice of San Antonio, TX; his sister: Kathleen A. and Harry Lyon of Geneva, IL; two aunts:  Luella Mendini of Iron Mountain, MI; Mary Swiontek of Menasha, WI; and uncle: Harold and Lois Lindholm of Mukwanago, WI; nieces and nephews: Angela and Mark Nash, Christopher and Laura Lyon, Gretchen and Nate Ngo, Zachery and Sarah Rice, and Alison and Mike Noriega.

He was preceded in death by his father: George Rice on Jan. 17, 2002.

Jeff came to Battle Creek in 1961 from Indianapolis, IN and graduated in 1973 from Springfield High School, Springfield, MI. He liked working with his hands; woodworking and metal work, camping, he was an avid reader, and enjoyed visiting his friends. He loved his dog "Phoebe" and she was his constant companion. He was a member of Redemption Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service after 5 PM Thursday, May 29, 2014, where the family will be present from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM and Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM.  

Funeral services commemorating Jeffrey Rice's life will be held Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Pastor Karl N. Strenge officiating. Burial will follow at the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens in Emmett Township, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to: Redemption Lutheran Church or the Cancer Research Institute of NYC, New York.  Arrangements by the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, a member by invitation Selected Independent Funeral Homes.
