Jerry Lee Akers, 61, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at his home. He was born October 24, 1952 in Battle Creek, the son of Richard and Erma (Wank) Akers. In high school, Jerry worked at Cereal City Wire. He graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1970. He held numerous jobs after high school including Springfield Foundry and Cole Brothers.  He married Lidia Arredondo on January 23, 1971 in Battle Creek. He started in business with his late cousin, Brian Wank, to own and operate Shire Middle Earth. He also owned Waterbeds Unlimited. Jerry took over his father and uncles business, Akers Wood Products, in 1987 and then retired in 2003. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #131 for 22 years and served as Exaulted Ruler from 2000-01 and 2009-10. He built the camp grounds at the Elks Lodge. Jerry was a life member of the NRA and a member of the American Legion Post #298. He loved to travel and go to the Aurora Lounge at the casino. He was very comical and loved to joke. He would give the shirt off of his back and was a family man. He was known as "Poppie" by his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lidia; mother, Erma; children, John (Nicole Carter) Akers and Janie Akers; siblings, Janet (Don) Cole and Thomas (Elizabeth) Akers; and grandchildren, Whitney Akers, Mercedes Akers, Mariah Akers, Little John Akers and Keagan Grable.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard and niece, Amy Cole.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 2:00-4:00 PM and from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service with Pastor William Bingham of Andrus Street Church of God officiating. Burial will be at the Bedford Cemetery in Bedford Township, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to the Elks Lodge #131 or the NRA.
